This route was planned by komoot.
This trail is rated as difficult by komoot. While some sections are moderately challenging, the overall route requires very good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes, especially for the steeper and rougher parts. The ascent to Degollada de Cofete is steady, and the descent towards Cofete can be slippery due to lava stones.
The full round trip for the Gran Valle - Cofete Trail (PR-FV 55) typically takes around 5 hours and 21 minutes to complete. This duration is for the entire 13.8 km route.
The trail begins on a dirt track through the Gran Valle, flanked by mountain ranges. As you ascend, the path becomes rougher and steeper. The descent towards Cofete features smaller paths that can be slippery due to lava stones. The landscape is arid, with unique flora like the Jandía cactus.
Along the route, you'll find several notable points. The official Start of PR FV 55 marks the beginning. You'll pass the Morro Jares Summit and can observe the Guanche Archaeological Site. The Degollada de Cofete offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Cofete coast and Gran Valle. Near Cofete village, you can also see the enigmatic Casa Winter.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the Gran Valle - Cofete Trail. However, as the route is within the Jandía Natural Park, it's crucial to keep your dog on a leash at all times to protect local wildlife, especially the rare Egyptian vulture (guirre), and to respect other hikers.
No, you do not need a specific permit to hike the Gran Valle - Cofete Trail (PR-FV 55), and there are no entrance fees for the Jandía Natural Park. However, please respect the park's regulations, which include staying on marked paths, not disturbing wildlife, and taking all your rubbish with you.
The best time to hike this trail is typically during the cooler months, from autumn to spring (October to May). Summers can be very hot and dry, making the hike more challenging. Always check the weather forecast before you go, as conditions can change rapidly.
The trail officially starts in Gran Valle, near Morro Jable. Parking is available in Morro Jable, from where you can access the trailhead. Alternatively, some hikers opt for a taxi or local bus to get closer to the start of the dirt track leading into Gran Valle.
The arid landscape is home to the endemic Jandía cactus (Euphorbia handiensis), a botanical symbol of Fuerteventura. You might also encounter local wildlife such as goats and, if you're lucky, the rare Egyptian vulture (guirre), which is protected in this Special Protection Area for Birds.
Yes, the Gran Valle - Cofete Trail (PR-FV 55) is a significant route in the area. It covers a large portion of the 'Gran Valle - Degollada del Cofete - Cofete' trail and also intersects with sections of the 'Red de Caminos de Pájara GRAN VALLE - COFETE' and 'Red de Caminos de Pájara COFETE - GRAN VALLE'. You may also find parts of the 'Shepherds' Path to Villa Winter' along the route.
While direct public transport to the Gran Valle trailhead is limited, you can take a bus to Morro Jable. From there, you can either walk to the trailhead or arrange for a taxi. There is also a dedicated bus service (Line 111) that runs a few times a day from Morro Jable to Cofete, which can be used for a one-way hike or to return from Cofete.
Our tour from Cofete to Gran Valle started at the bus stop at the Gran Valle car park, which is on the gravel road towards Cofete. We were lucky and there were still a few seats free in the small bus. (8.70€ per person for a one-way trip) The very nice bus driver let us get off behind Cofete (and before Playa de Cofete) and we walked along the road (gravel road) towards Villa Winter. A small private museum in the legendary villa, which is probably also interwoven with "our history" in the Third Reich, can be visited for a small tip. After that, a small trail winds up to the 354 m high Degollada de Cofete pass. Today it was pretty cloudy and there was a 'stiff breeze' at the top. But the view to the coast on both sides is really beautiful. On the way down we stopped at a small cave or tunnel. After just a few kilometers you can see the settlement of Gran Valle and the glittering car roofs in the parking lot.
Without a doubt one of the most exciting routes that can be done in Fuerteventura. A magnificent route along one of the traditional paths that through a spectacular valley will take us to cross the Cofete gorge and descend the slope until we reach the mysterious Casa Winter. We start on a path that is one of the cataloged "Natural Paths". A well-marked path that takes us into a spectacular valley with our sights set on the Cofete gorge. A slight but constant climb leads us to a steep slope that will take us to the top of Cofete. Getting up here already has its reward. Incredible views of all of Cofete, with its virgin yellow sand beaches, and of the entire Jandia Natural Park. The descent is along a path in the purest mountain pass style.
A hike with some elevation gain and sun exposure throughout. Bring sunscreen, plenty of water, and good footwear. Otherwise, the views of Cofete Beach from the top of the mountain are breathtaking. For me, the hike is one of the highlights on Fuerteventura. That's why I did them again. You walk through the beautiful valley up to the cliff (easy to walk) and enjoy the view of both sides from above (valley/Jandia Peninsula & Playa Cofete). There you stand on the actual edge of the crater, which runs down to the sea (Cofete). Then you screw yourself down. This time we first went to Villa Winter (behind the highest mountain in Fuerteventura, Pico de la Zarza, in the fog), then down to the sea (the coast on the right is also great. We have hiked it before) and then to the left by the sea long and high to Cofete. (We've also hiked behind it. There are also gorges there.) It couldn't be more rustic than Cofete. Drank a wine with no view and walked back. The path branches off not far from the only restaurant and huts. I just like this place. Stunning mountains & sea and the simple place...Simple life.
