This round highlights a special aspect of the history of the region around Zandvoort. The dune landscape used to be an important hunting ground for the nobility. Hares and birds in particular were hunted almost to extinction here. Today the area is strictly protected as a national park and the animal populations have recovered. With a bit of luck, you can spot wild ponies, highland cattle or fallow deer as you cycle through the dunes.
A remnant of the hunter era are the opulent summer residences, “landgoed” in Dutch, some of which you will pass on this tour. Today they are mostly open to the public and with their beautifully maintained gardens they are always worth a stop. On this tour, for example, you can visit the “Landgoed Duin & Kruidberg”, where you will find a spacious park and a fine-dining restaurant.
Overall, the Jägerrunde is a varied tour through the region around Zandvoort. You drive through the busy center of Haarlem, but also through the deserted expanses of the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park, where you can really enjoy the idyll in the middle of the dunes. After 44 kilometers you will reach your starting point again in the center of Zandvoort.

Very nice bike ride through the Dutch dunes. I biked 20 km to Haarlem and back on top of this which was still quite doable. The dune landscape has quite a bit of elevation which can be a little challenging at times but it's never for too long and the smooth cruising down the hills under the shadow of the forest is worth it, along with the views. One small issue is that since the Kennemerduinen are a protected nature reserve there are few roads you can use, which means that if any of them are blocked off you may have to skip parts or go around them; I had to take a detour and walk along the beach for half an hour because some paths were flooded due to heavy rainfall. So it might be a good idea to check online if there are any blocked roads, but otherwise this is my favourite bike route so far.
