This circular hiking trail starts at the Hompe windmill and leads around the Molenplas (mill lake). Two thousand year old trees, which were recovered during gravel mining, stand here as prehistoric monuments. A rich bird life and plants typical of wetlands offer a very special natural experience.

Short, relaxing walk on an island formed by two arms of the Maas - it leads around the mill lake (Molenplas) and starts at the Hompe windmill. A highlight is certainly the free-roaming Galloway cattle and a small herd of Konik horses. Another great idea is the adventurous passage over the water at the connection point between the two lakes, built with boulders. 😉👍🏻 https://www.wa-wa-we.eu/de/wanderwege-details/molenplas.html You can also find more beautiful tours in the area in my small collection: https://www.komoot.com/de-de/collection/1674716/-wasserwanderwelt
On the one day that we all have once a year 😉, I wanted to go for a little, relaxed walk with my father. The tour at Molenplas is usually the best option. I didn't think it would be a bit more adventurous today 😅 Because part of it is completely under water, so it's either "turn back or climb"...we decided to climb and made our way to the bird watching tower. Directly after that comes the "adventurous" part that my children love: namely over the stones over the water to the other side..... Only today the water was mostly over the stones... So the next decision: socks and shoes off and off we go... but watch out, SLIPPERY 🫣🤣 After that, the beer was well deserved and the feet could dry.... Then we went back to the mill with my father, to whom I had to promise not to go on such adventures with him in the future 😜 If you want to see more adventures from me, take a look at my collection from Ireland, where I was on tour for the Child Protection Association: https://www.komoot.com/de-de/collection/2616018/-the-kerry-way-irlands-suedwesten-in-sieben-tagen-herz-projekt-iv-zugunsten-kinderschutzbund Have a nice week and great adventures to you all #markusSupertramp P.S.: Unfortunately, the pictures are not quite in the right order at the end in the correct order...😉
😎 This is probably the shortest premium hiking trail in the "Water Hiking World." In our opinion, it's also one of the most beautiful! 👌 Wonderful, natural, and narrow paths, many beautiful natural vistas, and animals can be seen everywhere along the route: horses, cattle, waterfowl, birds of prey, and migratory birds, with photo opportunities everywhere you stop... 😄🤳 A great mix for a wonderful excursion! 🌞🦫 🐻****************************************🐻 https://www.wa-wa-we.eu/de/wanderwege-details/molenplas.html The Molenplas (Mill Lake) hiking trail starts at the Hompesche Windmill. What makes this trail special is that it is located on an island surrounded by two tributaries of the Meuse. Initially, a gravel path leads past a group of dead, two-thousand-year-old trees that were salvaged during gravel mining and now resemble prehistoric monuments. A little further along the lakeshore lies the village of Ohé with the fairytale Hasselholt Castle, built in the 16th century. The trail now leads along the dike of the Juliana Canal with its distinctive riparian vegetation until you have to cross the water between two lakes. Boulders from the Meuse serve as stepping stones. Caution! In wet weather and in winter The stepping stones may not be accessible (alternative dashed route). The next stop is a birdwatching hut, offering a magnificent view of the lake. The trail then continues through a diverse flora back to the Hompesche Mill. Tips and Special Features Hasselholt Castle was originally built in the late Gothic style – as evidenced by a date stone from 1548 – and was expanded in the Renaissance period. The Hompesche Windmill, with its eight stories and 37 meters high, has been used as a grain and oil mill since 1722, and its basement served as a prison. Very close by is the medieval fortress town of Stevensweert, with its Spanish fortress, old cannons, and many listed buildings and brick-clad streets. The nature reserve around the Molenplas is managed by the organization Natuurmonumenten (natuurmonumenten.nl). A small exhibition about the area and its origins can be seen in the Hompesche Mill. The Molenplas premium path, where you can cross the river using stones, may be flooded due to weather conditions. 🐻****************************************🐻 "The Hompesche Mill: a unique experience in nature! Atmospheric daytime dining The Hompesche Mill is a popular place for a break during a walk or bike ride. On the atmospheric terrace, visitors can enjoy a delicious cup of coffee with fresh cake, a refreshing ice cream, or a tasty dish from the small menu. The Hompesche Mill works with local suppliers to serve artisanal dishes, contributing to a unique culinary experience. The terrace offers a magnificent view of the surrounding nature and creates a relaxed atmosphere that young and old can enjoy. The Molenplas premium hiking trail is small but mighty. https://www.wa-wa-we.eu/de/touren/molenplas/index.html Directly at the small parking lot you go through the small gate and you are already on the tour around the "Mühlteich". Since the cattle and the hikers use the same paths, the paths are sometimes very muddy and "crappy", but mostly good. A creek runs along this first stretch, which cannot yet be found on the map. I kept to the right, then later you have to cross the small wooden bridge (photo 6). You may have to get very close to the cattle (2m, depending on where they are, but the animals are super relaxed, so no problem). On a pebble beach you will find several cairns and the 2000 year old "trees". The next highlight is the "picture frame" with a view of the "Mole". Then comes the Furde (bridge made of boulders). There is a tether, to increase the kick I jumped light-footed and free-handed from stone to stone 😂. Just before the lookout comes an area where the beavers have laid aside nearly a dozen trees. The tree thieves usually do this at night to get at the leaves and small twigs, which they like to eat. After the viewpoint, return to the parking lot.
It could be a very nice walk if it wasn't so muddy. The ground is way too wet making it very difficult to walk this route at this time of year.
As you know from the Netherlands, a very beautiful natural area where you can move freely. Birds and insects can be observed very well in many places. Here the nature photographer gets his money's worth. But also for people who just want to enjoy nature, a great area.

One of the most beautiful places ever! The only downside: it was far too short.
