No, this cycling loop is classified as difficult and requires very good fitness due to sustained climbs and approximately 459 meters of elevation gain over 31.7 km. While some sections between Honfleur and Deauville can be easier, this specific loop is challenging.
The terrain primarily consists of paved surfaces, including asphalt roads, streets, and designated cycleways. You might encounter minor segments of unpaved paths, gravel, or even cobblestones within Honfleur itself.
Deauville offers various parking options, including paid street parking and public car parks. It's advisable to look for parking near the town center or the beach, as the loop starts and ends in Deauville. Specific trailhead parking is not designated, but you can typically find spots suitable for starting your ride.
Deauville is accessible by train, with the Deauville-Trouville station serving the area. From there, you can cycle to the starting point of the loop. Some local buses also operate in the region, but check their bicycle carriage policies in advance.
This 31.7 km loop typically takes around 2 hours and 6 minutes of active cycling time. However, allow extra time for stops to enjoy the scenery, visit towns like Honfleur, and take breaks, especially given its 'difficult' rating.
You'll encounter several notable points of interest. Highlights include the historic Villa Sidonia (or Villa Honoré), the scenic Panorama du calvaire offering sweeping views, and the charming Grand Bec and its château. In Honfleur, don't miss The Old Harbour and the Old Enclos Quarter. The Butin Lighthouse is also along the way.
The route offers diverse scenery, from the chic resort town of Deauville and its famous 'Planches' boardwalk to the verdant meadows of the Pays d'Auge, known for apple orchards and dairy farms. You'll also experience the historic port of Honfleur with its medieval streets and panoramic coastal views from spots like the Calvaire de Bon-Secours.
The best time to cycle this loop is typically from spring to early autumn (April to October). During these months, the weather is generally milder and more conducive to cycling, and the natural landscapes are at their most vibrant. Summer can be busy with tourists, so consider late spring or early autumn for a more tranquil experience.
While dogs are generally welcome in many outdoor areas in France, specific rules for cycling paths can vary. It's best to keep dogs on a leash, especially in populated areas like Deauville and Honfleur, and be mindful of other cyclists and pedestrians. Always carry water for your dog and be prepared for paved surfaces.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to cycle this public route. However, you may encounter fees for parking in Deauville or for visiting certain attractions in Honfleur.
Yes, sections of this route are part of larger cycling networks. You will find it intersects with parts of the EV4 France, Deauville - Honfleur, and the Véloroute La Seine à Vélo (branche alternative vers Honfleur), making it a segment of broader regional and national cycling trails.
Very pleasant route with a good mountain bike. On the other hand, the first loop on the return journey (starting from Honfleur) goes through a steep mountain bike path that is not at all easy for a beginner. You have to be very, very careful because it goes down really steeply on a slippery path with prickly plants on both sides with just the width of a bike and a half to pass. Personally, I finished on foot because I rented a bike. Otherwise, super nice for a (long) outing: Trouville-Honfleur-Trouville
Easy ride on quiet roads with good tarmac. Hillier than expected.
