Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the Monte Bagioletto loop tour start, and is there parking available?

The loop tour begins from the small medieval village of Casalino, which is part of the municipality of Ligonchio. You can typically find parking in or near Casalino, which serves as the trailhead for this route.

What is the terrain like on this hike?

The trail offers a diverse experience, traversing through ancient paths, dense beech woods, and expansive open meadows. You'll encounter areas like the Rio Fossa Gelata and Ronco Piano, leading up to the Passo della Cisa. Higher sections feature high-altitude prairies like Prati di Sara. Expect varied surfaces, requiring sure footing and appropriate mountain footwear.

Is this trail suitable for beginners?

Komoot classifies this as a 'moderate' hike. While the paths are generally walkable, it involves a significant elevation gain of approximately 779 meters and a total duration of around 4.5 hours. It's best suited for hikers with a good level of training and experience, rather than absolute beginners.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

You'll encounter several natural highlights. These include the impressive Lavacchiello Waterfall, particularly striking during snowmelt. Further along, you'll reach the Prati di Sara and Lago del Caricatore, a high-altitude prairie with seasonal lakes and beautiful flora. The ultimate reward is reaching the Monte Bagioletto summit, offering spectacular panoramic views.

What is the best time of year to hike this loop?

The trail offers different experiences throughout the year. Spring and early summer are ideal for seeing the Lavacchiello Waterfall at its fullest during snowmelt and enjoying seasonal floral displays at Prati di Sara. Autumn brings spectacular burnt yellow hues to the meadows. Winter hiking is possible but requires specific equipment and experience due to snow and ice.

Is the Monte Bagioletto from Ligonchio loop tour dog-friendly?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed on this trail. However, as it's located within the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Tosco-Emiliano, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers.

Does this trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route briefly intersects with several other official trails. You'll find sections that overlap with the Sentieri Partigiani SP11 - sentiero del Cane Azzurro, Sentiero Lazzaro Spallanzani - Tappa 7, and the Anello del Cusna, among others. This can offer opportunities for extending your hike if desired.

Are there any specific regulations or permits needed for hiking in the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Tosco-Emiliano?

This trail is located within the Parco Nazionale dell'Appennino Tosco-Emiliano. Generally, no specific permits or entrance fees are required for hiking on marked trails. However, visitors are expected to respect park regulations, such as staying on marked paths, not disturbing wildlife, and carrying out all trash. Always check the official park website for the most current guidelines before your visit.

What kind of views can I expect from Monte Bagioletto?

From the summit of Monte Bagioletto (1758 m a.s.l.), you are rewarded with spectacular 360-degree panoramic views. These encompass the vast Apennine arch and extend across the Po Valley, offering breathtaking vistas on a clear day.

Are there any facilities like cafes or accommodation near the trailhead in Ligonchio?

Ligonchio is a small village, and while specific facilities directly at the Casalino trailhead might be limited, you can find cafes, pubs, and accommodation options within the broader Ligonchio municipality or nearby towns. It's advisable to check in advance, especially during off-peak seasons.

Trail Reviews

June 12, 2022, Anello da Presa alta - Prati di Sara

Beautiful round trip starting from Presa Alta. Be careful because the road that goes from Ligonchio to the rest area called Presa Alta is quite broken and in some points with steep slopes, nothing infeasible but do it carefully. Leave the car about a kilometer before in a clearing and walk along the dirt road to the beginning of CAI 635 which initially descends to ford the Ozola stream and then climbs decisively with a moderate slope, there are some sections with a steel cable because a a little exposed and on fairly crumbly ground so be careful. After about 1/2 hour you will arrive at the beautiful Lavacchiello waterfall on the Fosso Lama Cavalli. From here we go up again decisively until we meet the beautiful grassy plateau called Prati di Sara where we found a beautiful herd of horses in the wild. Beautiful photographic set among flowery meadows, the colossus of Cusna above the head, the Apuan Alps, the Apennine chain and many large isolated beech trees with shapes sculpted by the wind. It starts again on the 625 until we reach the start for the climb to Cusna from which we deviate to take the 623 which passes halfway up just outside the beech forest until we descend via the 627 which takes us back to Presa Alta inside the beautiful beech forest.
