Embark on a difficult jogging adventure around the Mynydd Mawr headland, a challenging 11.2-mile (18.0 km) loop that climbs 1347 feet (411 metres) over approximately 2 hours and 2 minutes. This route offers diverse coastal terrain, from rugged cliffs and expansive sandy beaches to prominent headlands like Pen y Cil. You will experience fine views along the beautiful coastline, including widescreen vistas of Aberdaron Bay and unparalleled sights of Bardsey Island.
This demanding route requires a very good level of fitness due to its challenging ascents and descents. Be prepared for varied terrain, including coastal paths winding through dunes and sections with steps, where sure-footedness is essential. Paths near the summit of Mynydd Mawr can be less distinct, especially in misty conditions, so navigational skills may be beneficial. If you visit in early summer, you will see vibrant wildflowers like thrift and rock rose.
Beyond its natural beauty, this trail follows an ancient pilgrim route to St Hywyn's Church in Aberdaron, a vital resting point for pilgrims journeying to Bardsey Island. The route takes you to Mynydd Mawr, the westernmost point of the North Wales mainland and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Keep an eye out for diverse wildlife, including seabirds, rare choughs, grey seals, and even dolphins.
