Hiking

Embark on a difficult 9.7-mile (15.6 km) loop from Rifugio Omio to Rifugio Gianetti, a challenging hike that typically takes around 8 hours and 25 minutes. You will gain a significant 4955 feet (1510 metres) in elevation as you traverse the Rhaetian Alps, connecting Valle dell'Oro and Val Porcellizzo. The route features varied terrain, including rocky paths and pastures, with technical sections around Passo del Barbacan Sud-Est where fixed chains aid your passage. Prepare for sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, including Pizzo Ligoncio and the distinct Punta della Sfinge, especially from Rifugio Omio and the high pass.

This high-mountain route demands very good fitness, sure-footedness, and alpine experience. Sturdy shoes are essential for navigating the exposed sections and rocky paths. While the research does not specify trailhead access or parking details, it mentions Bagni di Masino as a common starting point for hikes in the region, suggesting it's a key access point. Always check local conditions and weather forecasts before you set out, as alpine environments can change rapidly.

The loop connects two important mountain huts, Rifugio Omio and Rifugio Gianetti, which offer essential services and can serve as strategic points for multi-day treks. Rifugio Gianetti, built in 1913, is particularly notable as a reference point for those on the famous Sentiero Roma or attempting climbs to peaks like Pizzo Badile. You will also pass through areas with fir and beech forests, and the region holds historical interest with remnants of a gigantic landslide at Alpe dell'Oro and the thermal springs at Bagni di Masino.

The enormous boulders surrounding the small stone shelter are part of a gigantic landslide that killed some shepherds and livestock in 1963. From here the path continues towards the Omio refuge with the spectacular panorama that opens onto the Valle dell'Oro amphitheater.

Trail Reviews

Gianluca (free soul)
September 14, 2025, Bagni di Masino - Rif Gianetti - Rif Omio e rientro

This is a hike every mountain lover should undertake at least once in their lifetime! It begins in the enchanted woods of Val Masino, where it almost seems as if an elf might emerge from the trees at any moment and take you by the hand. It then ascends to the expansive views of Val Porcellizzo, where your gaze wanders unhindered over the rugged, majestic peaks that loom on the horizon. It's an unforgettable experience, capable of leaving an indelible mark on the memory of those who experience it. Requires good physical preparation, but without excessive difficulty, it offers thrills that are worth every step.

Cyclopean stones that have been tumbling down through the fir and beech forests since time immemorial. This created waterfalls in the stream and a clearing full of rocks to climb! It is Val Masino (but could the name be the local dialect for "boulder"?) Ever since I started bouldering I dreamed of visiting it. Today I walked a beautiful ring: bring your swimsuit! The jewel in the crown: the close-up view of the "Bad Giant", the Badile peak, one of the six great peaks of the Alps. You can admire it once you arrive at the Gianetti refuge. The refuge is full of photos and curiosities. An incredible poster that is in the dining room: the view of the north of the Badile is frightening. Going down into the valley that opens below the refuge: more bathrooms!
