Upton Marshes loop – best walks in the Broads

Wild marshes, nature-rich fens, beguiling mill buildings, big skies and a gorgeous boatyard, this walk encapsulates much of what makes the Broads so special. Starting from Eastwood Whelpton boatyard, the loop explores Upton Broad and Marshes nature reserve, follows the lazily meandering River Bure and discovers the impressive Upton Tall Mill.

On the edge of Upton Village, Eastwood Whelpton is a classic Broads boatyard where many fine vessels bob away on the water. From here, you can see Palmers Hollow Post Mill, one of only two ‘Hollow Post’ drainage mills left in the national park.

The route ventures northwest initially, through the vibrant Upton Broad and Marshes nature reserve, home to over 20 recorded species of dragonfly. It contains myriad habitats, including alder carr woodland, fen, reedbed and grazing marsh, making it a haven for many plant and animal species.

Beyond the reserve, the loop follows dykes to the River Bure, one of the national park’s great rivers. Follow the river to its confluence with the Thurne and on to Upton Tall Mill. Also known as Upton Black Mill on account of its tarred black tower, the building is a wonderful sight.

Where the Bure meet Upton Dyke, you leave the river behind, following this narrow channel back to Eastwood Whelpton.
