Trail Reviews

Hensa⛰️☀️😎🍻
September 4, 2025, 🇦🇹Peter Wiechenthaler Hütte🍺 & Steinalm🍺😎

What an awesome tour😍😍😍 Report to follow, we've been on the road for almost 24 hours now 🥵🥱😉 But it was awesome 🔨👌😍👍

From the Bachwinkel car park this morning, the first step was steadily uphill towards the Peter Wiechentaler Hütte. At first the path winds in serpentines through the forest, later you reach more open terrain, so that there are always great views of the different valleys. After 2 1/4 hours we reached the hut and stopped for a drink. Then the demanding part of today's tour began. The route to the Steinalm is marked with a black dot and, according to the hiking guide, is only recommended for experienced mountaineers. Well, at least I had one with me. It started out harmlessly, but in the further course several passages secured by ropes, ladders and steps, as well as exposed passages had to be overcome. In retrospect, everything is feasible, but definitely adventurous for someone who has never done anything like this. 🥵😳

The Peter Wiechenthaler Hütte - I've done it before at the end of October 2020, but today I was accompanied. At that time the hut was in operation, now (mid-November) unfortunately not anymore. It was a bit of a shame, but it was still a nice tour that I always enjoy going on. ☺️ Video: https://www.relive.cc/view/vevYJ3pV4JO

Today's tour shouldn't be quite like that be long, only the altitude was allowed to increase slightly. We hoped that the Peter Wiechenthaler Hut would be waiting for us after the climb. https://wiechenthaler-huette.at/ In a good mood, the 🌥 mix went straight up. Over hill and dale and with the sweat of our faces we climbed up the mountain and in between we were able to enjoy the great view again and again. We were lucky, the hut is still open this week! Just lovely! Very friendly service, cool non-alcoholic wheat + strong espresso and a delicious Kaiserschmarrn were just the thing, plus the indescribably beautiful and atmospheric mountain world! After the great stay in the hut, we thought it was all downhill from now on... This turned out to be quite challenging. We would not recommend the rest of the tour for anyone who is not completely free from heights, for families with children and for dogs.

Today we finished off with another spectacular tour. First, we ascended along a farm/forestry track to the Steinalm. We took a short break in the quaint little hut before tackling the black via ferrata to the Peter Wiechenthaler Hut. For us flatland Tyroleans, this climb was quite a challenge. Absolute headroom and surefootedness are essential. The weather also played into our hands; this climb is not recommended in wet conditions. A certain amount of stamina is also recommended, as the climb is about 3 km long and presents various challenges. We definitely had fun, and the stop at the Wiechenthaler Hut rounded things off perfectly. I added the first 12 photos later; they were taken by my fellow climbers.

Very challenging but totally cool. It was fun. If you are afraid of heights, the tour is not recommended. We liked it. .

A beautiful and also challenging round. It can be done both ways and I would say both ways are doable. On the east side you should have a good head for heights and like the exposed passages and sections with the ladders. With a fear of heights that's nothing.

The hike from the Bachwinkel to the Peter Wiechenthalerhütte is moderately difficult, but from there to the Steinalm it becomes challenging. I would call that difficult for my assessment. In total, with all the breaks, we were on the road for 9 hours. A great experience.
