Onward to the “Toit du Rhône”, in other words Mont Rigaud. This walk is ideal for those who like forest trails. Some beautiful panoramas punctuate the route between the passages in the undergrowth.
The route begins at the Col du Crie, well known in the region, it is a popular picnic spot for families during summer weekends. It houses the hiking and trail center and was highlighted when the Tour de France took its routes. Moreover, when you arrive, you will see the giant bicycle near the parking lot.
The first part of the route goes around Mont Chonay. It is done in the undergrowth on a narrow path. You pass near fields where cows are grazing. Don't forget to greet them!
The route then alternates with some passages on small roads. Logging has opened up large areas of the forest, allowing access to the surrounding landscapes.
The climax arrives and the wooden tower of Mont Saint-Rigaud is finally revealed. At the top, a large orientation table allows you to identify all the surrounding mountains and towns. You are on the highest point of the Rhône at 1,007 meters above sea level.
The descent is via forest paths. Be careful, in winter these can quickly become very muddy. I recommend good shoes! Once you have passed this part, you find wider forest paths. Around a bend, the superb Châtelard viaduct appears, which soon marks the end of this loop. The last kilometers follow the route of this old railway line which takes you back to the Col de Crie.
