This route was planned by komoot.
The trail offers varied terrain, including paved roads, dirt paths, and many stone steps. While sections along the levada are relatively flat, expect significant inclines and descents, especially the initial downhill walk from the parking area and the uphill climb on the return. Some parts can be narrow with unprotected drops, and rocks may be slippery, particularly near waterfalls or after rain.
The trail is famous for its lush scenery within the ancient Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Key highlights include the Stream crossing in Madeira Natural Park, the soothing sound of flowing water from the levadas, and the iconic 25 Fontes (25 Springs) Waterfall, an amphitheater-like natural pool. You'll also pass the Casa do Rabaçal Café & Fountain, and there's an optional detour to the impressive Risco Waterfall.
Parking is available at the Rabaçal parking lot. From there, you'll typically walk down a paved road to reach the official levada path. During peak times, a shuttle service often operates from the parking lot down to the trailhead to manage traffic and reduce the initial downhill walk.
The trail can be hiked year-round, but the best time is generally during the spring and autumn months when the weather is mild and the vegetation is at its most vibrant. To avoid crowds, which can be significant due to its popularity, consider starting your hike early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the PR 6 - Levada das 25 Fontes Trail or to enter the general area of Madeira Natural Park where it is located. Access to the trail is free.
While dogs are generally allowed on many levada trails in Madeira, it's important to keep them on a leash due to the narrow paths, potential drops, and the presence of other hikers. Be mindful that some sections might be challenging for pets, especially those with many steps or slippery surfaces.
The trail is rated as moderate, and while it's generally safe, it involves a significant distance (around 8 km) and elevation changes (400m up and down), including many steps. Younger children or those not accustomed to hiking might find it challenging. Consider their stamina and comfort with narrow paths and drops before embarking on the full route.
Yes, the route is part of a network of trails in the Rabaçal area. It directly connects with PR 6.1 - Levada do Risco, which leads to the impressive Risco Waterfall. Other nearby trails include PR 6.3 - Vereda da Lagoa do Vento and PR 6.2 - Levada do Alecrim.
Wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip, as paths can be slippery. Bring layers of clothing as weather can change, and a waterproof jacket is advisable. A headlamp or flashlight is useful for tunnels if you encounter any. Carry enough water and snacks, and consider hiking poles for stability on descents and steps.
Yes, near the start of the levada path, you'll find the Casa do Rabaçal Café & Fountain, which offers refreshments and a place to rest. It's a good spot for a break before or after your hike.
To enjoy the 25 Fontes (25 Springs) Waterfall with fewer people, aim to start your hike very early in the morning (before 8 AM) or later in the afternoon (after 3 PM). This strategy often allows for a more peaceful experience at the waterfall and on the narrower sections of the trail.
The visit to the fairy forest before was so short because we had planned a hike in Rabaçal. We went to the "probably most beautiful and most popular levada hike" on all of Madeira. The landscape was really beautiful and the goal, the waterfall from 25 springs, is very impressive. The path was really tough in between and consisted of countless stairs that required a lot of fitness. The flat part along the levada was very nice, partly so narrow that only one person could get through (that's why we set off in the afternoon to avoid oncoming traffic ;)) and partly at a dizzying height. Conclusion: a fantastic hike, but very strenuous, which was not to be expected based on the description "easy". 😉
SSW31- I'm slowly reaching my limits🤰🏼! Like last time, we did not start the hiking area again until around 4 p.m., then had dinner in the Casa de Rabacal and then set off for the 25 Fontes. We were there around 6 p.m. and had wonderful evening sun and the 25 Fontes completely to ourselves 😍
Very nice path along the water channel to the waterfall. Worthwhile. But start early. Later it resembles a hiking highway. We are back up from the rest stop with the bus shuttle. So we saved ourselves 200 vertical meters on the road.
Nice hike but with steep and narrow passages. A bit crowded at lunchtime but still nice. The waterfall spot is very beautiful and you can see one big and many small waterfalls.
The most famous Levada on the island. This trek leads through the Rabaçal valley to the famous “25 Fontes”.
Parking: Free Footwear: Category A/B "The Levada das 25 Fontes route, which starts on the 105 road in Rabaçal, is one of the most popular walks among tourists and locals. It is 4.3 km long and, with an estimated duration of 3 hours, is the perfect choice for those who want to be surprised by the lush nature. Although this hiking trail runs practically parallel to the Levada do Risco route (PR 6.1) and has the same starting point, this medium-difficulty route will take you to other interesting places and landscapes. In a magnificent natural setting, the Levada de 25 Fontes route offers the opportunity to discover (and, of course, to contemplate at your leisure) the Lake of the 25 Springs. The lake is fed by the waters that flow down from the Paul da Serra plateau and appear here in 25 places. A picture with unique contours. But before you reach this place, you have the opportunity to be surprised by some landscapes that will surprise you along the Levada das 25 Fontes route: For example, the view of the valley of the Ribeira da Janela stream is impressive due to the characteristic liveliness of the green laurel forest. When you reach the end point of the 25 Fontes Levada route, you can enjoy the beauty of the lake and fortify yourself for the way back. This takes you along the same route." - Source: visitmadeira.com Conclusion: Beautiful tour, but quite crowded. In high season you probably have to get there very early, because we already had problems finding a parking space in December.
The outward journey was easy and gentle, passing magnificent gorse slopes and deep gorges, on narrow paths and with some difficulty due to oncoming traffic. Arriving at the magnificent waterfall, there was an impressive crowd, which isn't exactly what you need in such an idyllic place! The return journey was incredibly strenuous, with steep paths and high stone steps. But always surrounded by stunning nature, it was worth all the effort!
The Risco waterfalls and 25 Fonts are really a worthwhile destination. But beware, the same applies here as to many destinations in Madeira - get there early, preferably very early. When you do that, it's really lovely there. The atmosphere indescribable. But also beware - the temperature difference is enormous. We warn there in mid-May. A glorious day was announced, sun and over 20°m just by the sea. At 8:30 dense fog, gusty wind and less than 10 degrees. In the valleys it goes and in the course of the day it will be pleasant but at the start it is essential to have warm and water-repellent clothes with you
