A beautiful area. Unfortunately too overcrowded. There are so many equally beautiful hikes. You don't have to go. On the other side of the parking lot is the Fatima Chapel. The path to Christo Rei starts there. Most of the time you are alone, except for the cows that run free.
Despite the fog a nice Levada do Alecrim tour to the waterfall Lago Dona Beija. Unfortunately without a view of the valley today 🤷🏻♀️. We made a detour up to a large pool. But didn't find a nice way and thus back to the Levada way.
A very beautiful levada hike. Parking is always difficult here in Rabacal, as the large crowds to the 25 springs also start here. But the levada is not nearly as crowded. I would go again anytime.
Our favorite tour. Even though parking is difficult, the spot by the waterfall is a great place to linger. We spent an hour just sitting by the water. Sturdy shoes and a towel (to dry off after cooling off) are highly recommended.
Because I liked this levada so much, I walked it to the end again today. The Dona Baja lagoon is very beautiful. It also seems to be the starting point for canyoning activities, as there are safety devices above the second waterfall downstream to the larger pool.
The trail begins on Route 105 in the Rabaçal area and leads along the Levada do Alecrim, located at an altitude of 1,300 meters, to its source in Ribeira do Lajeado. It's a 3.5 km hike (one way) through a picturesque landscape surrounded by nature, offering sweeping views of the Rabaçal Valley and the Ribeira da Janela stream. The green tones are determined by the characteristic density of the laurel forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You'll also find several heather tunnels here, providing a unique backdrop to the hike. A cloud-filled natural spectacle, sometimes sunny, sometimes foggy, sometimes downright windy.
Unfortunately we couldn't do the circular walk because part of it was closed. So we turned back to A and continued to Ribeira da Lajeado.
