A cable car for goods transport leads down to the valley at the edge of the demolition.
There a few steps lead to the edge, where you can rest, it's a dead end anyway and therefore a turning point. Without clouds you have a great view of the valley and the sea in the north of Madeira.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the estimated hiking time for the PR 13 - Fanal Trail?

The komoot route for the PR 13 - Fanal Trail is approximately 20.1 km (12.5 miles) long and typically takes around 6 hours to complete. This duration can vary based on your fitness level, the weather conditions, and how much time you spend enjoying the scenery and Fanal Laurel Forest.

Is the PR 13 - Fanal Trail suitable for beginners?

This trail is classified as difficult due to its length, significant elevation changes (over 600 meters up and down), and varied terrain. It includes strenuous stair climbs and sections of incline. It is best suited for hikers with a moderate to good level of physical fitness and some prior hiking experience. Beginners might find it challenging, especially if conditions are wet.

What is the terrain like on the PR 13 - Fanal Trail?

The trail offers a diverse landscape, moving from open green stretches to dense forest. You'll encounter a mix of dirt paths, loose terrain, and stairs. The path can be muddy and slippery, particularly after rain, so sturdy hiking shoes with good grip and trekking poles are highly recommended. The Fanal area itself has volcanic origins.

What are the main highlights and viewpoints along the route?

The route offers several stunning sights. You'll find impressive panoramic views, including the View of the ocean from PR13 Vereda do Fanal, the Queimadinha Viewpoint, and a View over Seixal Valley and Madeira's North Coast. The ultimate highlight is the enchanting Fanal Laurel Forest, part of the ancient Laurissilva Forest UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its mystical, gnarled 'Til' trees and frequent misty conditions.

Does the trail intersect with other well-known paths?

Yes, the route primarily follows the official PR 13 - Vereda do Fanal trail (94% of the route). It also briefly passes through sections of Montado do Fanal (34%), PR 28 - Levada da Rocha Vermelha (10%), and PR 13.1 (7%).

What is the best time of year to hike the PR 13 - Fanal Trail?

The Fanal Forest is famous for its misty, ethereal atmosphere, which is more common during the cooler, wetter months, typically from autumn through spring. While this creates a magical experience, it also means paths can be very slippery. For clearer views and generally drier conditions, summer might be preferred, but you risk missing the iconic fog. Be prepared for unpredictable weather year-round.

Is the PR 13 - Fanal Trail dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally permitted on many trails in Madeira, it's always best to check local regulations for specific areas within the Madeira Natural Park. If allowed, ensure your dog is kept on a leash, especially given the varied terrain and potential for wildlife encounters. Be prepared to carry out all waste.

Do I need a permit or is there an entrance fee for the PR 13 - Fanal Trail or Madeira Natural Park?

No, there is no specific permit required or entrance fee to hike the PR 13 - Fanal Trail or to access the general areas of the Madeira Natural Park where this trail is located. However, always respect the natural environment and follow any posted regulations, as the Fanal Forest is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Where can I park to access the PR 13 - Fanal Trail?

The PR 13 - Fanal Trail often starts near the Paúl da Serra plateau. Specific parking areas are available at points like Pico dos Assobiadouros or near the Fanal Forest itself. It's advisable to check the exact trailhead location for the specific route you plan to take on komoot for the most accurate parking information, as options can vary for point-to-point versus out-and-back hikes.

What should I wear and bring for this hike?

Given the trail's difficulty and unpredictable weather, wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support and grip. Layers of clothing are essential, as conditions can change rapidly from sunny to misty and cool. Bring a waterproof jacket, plenty of water, snacks, a first-aid kit, a fully charged phone, and ideally, trekking poles for stability on slippery or uneven sections.

Are there any local secrets or tips for experiencing the Fanal Forest?

To truly experience the mystical atmosphere of the Fanal Laurel Forest, aim to visit on a day with fog or mist. While this might obscure distant views, it enhances the 'elvish' and otherworldly feel of the ancient trees, making for incredible photography opportunities. Arriving early in the morning can also increase your chances of experiencing this unique weather phenomenon before crowds gather.

I found today's tour incredibly beautiful again. High up, it leads through low forests, and there are breathtaking views every now and then. There are a few steps to climb, and they don't meet any DIN standards 🙃. I really enjoyed it. The trail would have continued for another 3km 🥵 We were ready to turn back, but if you're fit and want to, you can just add on.

Almost 20km with lots of sun. But it was worth it. Very nice path with many geocach points. Ilka searched like crazy 😀😃

The clouds are really mystical. At the "holes" in between there were spectacular views

Old laurel trees and clouds immerse the forest in a mystical environment.

Today we went through the primeval vegetation of Madeira, up the laurel forest, to Fanal, one of the seven natural wonders of Portugal, where 500-year-old Til trees form an enchanting forest. From there we continued under huge heather trees to the Paul da Serra plateau. Along the way there were magnificent views above the clouds of Chao Ribeira, Ribeira da Janela and Rabacal. A great, but very demanding tour. 😀

Unfortunately I didn't stop in time and from the turning point I went back by car. The actual tour is about 11 km long.
