Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to hike the PR18 Levada do Rei Trail?

The hike typically takes between 2.5 to 3.5 hours to complete, including time for breaks. The total distance is approximately 10.2 kilometers (6.3 miles) for the out-and-back route.

Is the PR18 Levada do Rei Trail suitable for beginners or families?

Yes, this trail is generally considered easy to easy-to-moderate, making it suitable for most fitness levels, including beginners and families with older children. Its gentle incline and well-defined path contribute to a relaxed nature walk.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The trail primarily follows a levada, an irrigation channel, so it's mostly flat with minimal elevation gain. The path is often wide and well-maintained, winding through the lush Laurissilva forest. Be aware that sections can become slippery after heavy rain.

What can I see along the route?

You'll experience deep immersion into the ancient Laurissilva forest, a UNESCO-listed natural heritage site, with its rich biodiversity. Highlights include the King's Levada (PR18) itself, several small waterfalls (one where the path goes directly underneath), and a short tunnel. The trail culminates at Ribeiro Bonito, a serene natural amphitheater with moss-covered walls and cascading waterfalls.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Caminho do Cascalho- Boca das Voltas and the Caminho do Curralinho.

Is the PR18 Levada do Rei Trail dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed on Madeira's levada trails, it's always best to keep them on a leash to protect the local wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers. Please also be mindful of the narrow sections and potential for slippery surfaces.

Do I need a permit or is there an entrance fee for the Laurissilva Forest?

As of January 1, 2026, the PR18 hike will require advance reservations and a small fee. These can be made on the Simplifica Madeira website. Currently, there is no general entrance fee for the Laurissilva Forest itself, but specific trails may have regulations.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

Madeira's climate is mild year-round, making this trail enjoyable in any season. However, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) often offer the most pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. Be prepared for potential rain and mist, especially within the forest, regardless of the season.

Where can I park for the PR18 Levada do Rei Trail?

Parking is available near the trailhead, which is typically accessed from São Jorge. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, as parking spaces can fill up quickly.

What should I bring for the hike?

We recommend wearing sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, as sections can be slippery. A lightweight waterproof jacket is useful for potential waterfall crossings and the misty forest environment. Bring sufficient water, snacks, and a small flashlight for the short tunnel, although it's often not strictly necessary.

Are there any viewpoints or opportunities for scenic views?

While much of the walk is within the dense forest, there are occasional opportunities for views of the São Jorge Valley and the island's northern slopes. The primary scenic beauty lies in the lush, ancient Laurissilva forest itself and the tranquil Ribeiro Bonito at the end of the trail.

Today we wanted to do a relaxed Levada hike. The weather forecast announced some rain and so we chose an easy tour. Shortly after we started, however, it started to rain and didn't stop. In the end everything was really done 🙈 Neither of us found it bad because it was warm. When we arrived at the hotel, the sun was shining again, so we went comfortably to the pool 🍹 The altitude meters are not correct here, maybe the GPS was irritated by all the water 😂 It was about 50 meters in altitude!

Beautiful Levada, without any difficulty. Beautiful view of the valley and the end is absolutely magnificent. We did the hike very early so as not to meet anyone and enjoy the small jungle at the end

our last hike was a relaxed tour along the Levada Do Rei 💦...we learned a lot of interesting things about the flora from our hiking guide...it was a nice end to our trip to the beautiful nature of Madeira...

Today we took a very pleasant and comfortable walk along a levada. These are the irrigation systems on Madeira that have been in use since time immemorial. Today, they are even used to generate electricity. There are 1,000 km of hiking trails besides levadas on Madeira. Some are dangerous trails, including some like the one we walked today. So, hiking is a great activity in Madeira.

A beautiful tour along one of the famous levadas. Between nature, panoramic views, and cool water.

The tour is about 2 km longer than recorded, there are only a few rest stops and only stops after returning.

Finally, a lovely hike along a forest levada. It's generally quite popular, and rightly so. But we were a bit lucky; it wasn't too crowded today. The levada leads through the forest, crosses a waterfall that you have to wade through, and ends in a gorge. The return route is the same as the way there, but you still discover new things along the way. At the end, there's a bar where refreshments are readily available.

You don't need to have cleaned your shoes beforehand.... :-)
