This route was planned by komoot.
The Vereda do Larano Trail is generally considered easy to moderate. While some sections are relatively flat and well-maintained, making it suitable for casual hikers, the overall Komoot rating for this route is 'difficult' due to its length and elevation changes. Variations, especially those extending to Machico or Caniçal, can be more challenging. Good hiking shoes are recommended, particularly after rain when parts can be muddy and slippery.
The trail offers a diverse landscape. You'll experience a mix of lush greenery, dense forest paths, and exposed coastal sections. Much of the path hugs rugged, rocky cliffs, providing dramatic ocean views. There are also areas with a distinctive red, Mars-like dirt terrain. While generally well-maintained, some parts can be uneven or muddy, especially after rain.
The trail is renowned for its breathtaking coastal scenery. Notable viewpoints include Boca do Risco, which offers spectacular panoramic views. You'll also get expansive views of the ocean and the island's coastline, including the iconic Penha d'Àguia rock formation and, on clear days, the distant Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula.
Madeira's climate is generally mild year-round, making the Vereda do Larano Trail accessible in most seasons. However, for the most pleasant experience, consider hiking during spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) when temperatures are comfortable and the weather is typically stable. Always check the local forecast before you go, as rain can make parts of the trail slippery.
The trail is generally considered dog-friendly, but it's crucial to keep your dog on a leash, especially in exposed cliffside sections and when passing other hikers. Be mindful of the narrow paths and potential drop-offs. Always carry enough water for yourself and your pet.
No, you do not need a permit or have to pay an entrance fee to hike the Vereda do Larano Trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
This Komoot route starts in Porto da Cruz. You can often find parking in or near the town center. Depending on your chosen variation of the trail, other starting points like Machico are also common, each with their own parking options. Always check local signage for parking regulations.
Yes, it is possible to reach the starting points of the Vereda do Larano Trail, such as Porto da Cruz or Machico, by public transport. Local bus services connect these towns to other parts of Madeira. It's advisable to check the current bus schedules and routes in advance to plan your journey effectively.
While the trail runs alongside significant drop-offs and features sections carved into cliffs over 300 meters above the ocean, the path is generally wide enough to feel safe. Some sketchier sections even have railings. However, individuals with severe vertigo might find certain exposed areas challenging. If you are concerned, consider researching specific sections or opting for less exposed trails.
Given the varied terrain and potential for mud, good hiking shoes with solid grip are essential. Dress in layers to adapt to changing weather conditions, as coastal areas can be windy. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a rain jacket, especially if hiking outside of the driest months. A camera is a must for the stunning views!
Yes, the route incorporates sections of several official trails. You will hike along parts of the Vereda do Larano, Larano - Boca do Risco - Caniçal, and Percurso de treino Porto da Cruz - 19km. These connections allow for various route variations, including point-to-point hikes between towns like Machico and Porto da Cruz.
Since the north of the island was finally free of clouds, we chose this route straight away. A really beautiful route that is rightly among the top 20 routes here on Komoot. The first few kilometers are steep uphill but then the whole coastal section is actually quite leisurely. A good alternative to all the Levada tours. The information about the 800 meters of altitude according to Komoot is not correct. It is only 400 meters of altitude.
Very beautiful mountain trail along the coast with a great view. Not many people. Unfortunately only possible as a return trip (don't know what the GPS did)
Parking at the end of the street and at the start of the hiking trail is not recommended. There are only about 5 places and turning is virtually impossible. I spontaneously skipped the planned circular route back. Far too steep and slippery. The coastal path is so beautiful that you can easily walk back and forth.
Today we went from the tranquil village of Ponto da Cruz via varied paths from the other side to the Boca do Risco viewpoint. Last time we came from Canical and this time we enjoyed the wonderful panoramic hiking trail that meanders along the rocks and cliffs as a wide band. The ascent and descent went along the beach and over steep paths, levadas and, as usual, many stairs. The wind from the sea and the largely north-facing orientation made the sunny stages much more bearable.
Our 6th tour on Madeira took us along the adventurous coastal path between Porto da Cruz and Machico. Up to Boca do Risco, it is an easy-to-walk levada path; to continue on the coastal path, you should be absolutely sure-footed and not afraid of heights. There are countless beautiful viewpoints along the path 😎
One of the most beautiful coastal tours ... even the climb through the gardens ... the scent, the peace, the landscape ... sharpen your senses ... simply great
It was supposed to go to Pico do Ariero but the weather was too bad. And then we did this fantastic alternative tour. 🥰
