This route was planned by komoot.
This hike is rated as moderate. It requires good physical fitness and sure-footedness due to varying terrain, including uneven paths, rock-hewn steps, and potentially slippery sections. Be prepared for an initial downhill section that means an uphill climb on your return.
The loop is approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles) long and typically takes around 4 hours and 41 minutes to complete. This duration can vary depending on your pace and how much time you spend enjoying the sights.
The trail takes you through lush laurel forests, a UNESCO protected area. Key highlights include the famous 25 Fontes (25 Springs) Waterfall, a unique 'weeping wall' where numerous small cascades fall into a tranquil pool. You'll also walk alongside historic levadas, and pass through the Levada da Rocha Vermelha Tunnel, which requires a flashlight. There's also a stream crossing in Madeira Natural Park.
Yes, the Levada da Rocha Vermelha section of the loop includes tunnels. These can be long, wet, and narrow, sometimes only 30 cm wide in places. It is essential to bring a flashlight or headlamp for safe passage through these sections.
Madeira's climate allows for hiking year-round. However, spring (March to May) offers vibrant wildflowers, while autumn (September to November) provides pleasant temperatures. To avoid peak crowds, especially at the popular 25 Fontes waterfall, consider starting your hike early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
The trail is typically accessed from the Rabaçal area. Parking is available, but it can fill up quickly due to the trail's popularity. There is often a shuttle service from the main parking area down to the start of the levada walks, which can save you a significant walk on an asphalt road. Check local signage for current shuttle information and operating hours.
Currently, there is no general entrance fee for this trail. However, due to its high popularity, reservations and fees may be required to hike this trail as of 2026. It's advisable to check the official Visit Madeira website (visitmadeira.com) closer to your travel date for the most up-to-date information on any required permits or fees.
While Madeira has many dog-friendly areas, specific regulations for trails within Madeira Natural Park can vary. Given the narrow and sometimes crowded sections, tunnels, and protected natural environment, it's best to confirm current regulations with local authorities or park information centers regarding dogs on this particular trail.
Near the trailhead, you'll find the Casa do Rabaçal Café & Fountain, which offers a place to grab a drink or a snack before or after your hike. It's a good spot for a quick break.
Given the terrain and potential conditions, we recommend bringing sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, a waterproof jacket (Madeira weather can change quickly), plenty of water, snacks, and a flashlight or headlamp for the tunnels. Trekking poles can also be helpful for stability on slippery or uneven sections.
Yes, this route intersects with and runs alongside several other official trails in the Rabaçal area. You'll find yourself on sections of the PR 6 - Levada das 25 Fontes, PR 28 - Levada da Rocha Vermelha, and PR 6.1 - Levada do Risco, among others. This allows for potential extensions or variations if you wish to explore further.
Today we combined two Levadas 🥵 It was very demanding for Margot and me with many meters of altitude. The 1.8 km long tunnel from the second hike was officially closed due to construction work ⛔️. Which we didn't know. But we were lucky 😉 and were allowed to go through anyway 😃 A drawback, as with all hikes here, no benches on the entire hike. Ergo 🥪 lunch on the ground 🤷 The beer 🍺 of the day (picture 60) was again a souvenir from home. A Helles Kölsch with 4.8% vol. no more and no less. Light and easy to drink.
