Hiking
Embark on a moderate 5.0-mile (8.1 km) hike through the Surrey Hills, gaining 609 feet (186 metres) of elevation over approximately 2 hours and 18 minutes. This loop from Westhumble offers panoramic views across the Denbies Wine Estate, with vistas extending to Box Hill and Leith Hill. You will traverse a mix of unpaved paths, footpaths, and chalk downland, winding through woodlands and open fields where diverse wildflowers and butterflies, like the Adonis Blue, thrive. Keep an eye out for the tall spire of St Barnabas Church on Ranmore Common, a prominent landmark visible from afar.
Be prepared for a varied terrain that includes hilly climbs and some steep slopes, which can be slippery when wet. The route requires good fitness and sure-footedness, especially as some sections can be muddy during wetter seasons. While there are no stiles, you will encounter several gates along the way. Consider visiting the Denbies Wine Estate's visitor center for a break or to learn more about England's largest vineyard.
This trail is a highlight within the beautiful Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), offering a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural interest. A significant portion of the hike follows parts of the North Downs Way, a well-known long-distance path. The Denbies Hillside section is particularly notable as a chalk downland and woodland area, recognized for its important habitat supporting wildflowers and various butterfly species.
