Hiking

This Tour takes you on a relaxing walk through the beautiful Friese Veen nature reserve. This 5.8 kilometer walk, suitable for walkers of all levels, offers an ideal opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The route will soon take you to Huis Friescheveen. This is a historic country house dating back to 1909. As you walk the path, you can be inspired by the history of this estate, which was once owned by the Camphuis family. Discover the charming details and architectural splendor of this historic gem.

During the tour you will also encounter plenty of picturesque vistas. Between the greenery and over the water you can sometimes see surprisingly far. Take in the beautiful view while dreaming away by the rippling water.

Finally, you continue your journey to the so-called Blikwal. Here nature surprises you with a special variety of fruit trees and shrubs, such as apple trees, grapes, raspberries and currants. This unusual vegetation was created by strengthening and raising the dike around the Frisian Veen with city waste from Groningen after 1900. These remains also contained seeds, which allowed the fruit trees to grow. Even today, among the lush vegetation, you can still see old pots, pans and lids, which has given this place the nickname 'the Blikwal'.

How do you get there? There is a parking lot at the Industrieweg in Paterswolde. Are you coming by public transport? Then you can get off at the Vennerstraat bus stop in Paterswolde and walk to the starting point in a few minutes.

De Blikwal

Highlight • Natural

Apple trees, grapes, raspberries and currants grow on the dike, a somewhat strange vegetation for a nature reserve. This arose because the dike around the Friese Veen was strengthened after 1900 and raised with city waste from Groningen. This waste also came with seeds from the Groningen city gardens, from which this special vegetation emerged. You can even spot pots, pans and lids among the plants; that is why this dike is also called 'the canal wall'.
