This route was planned by komoot.
The trail typically starts in the charming heart of Vallehermoso Village. You can usually find parking within the village itself, which serves as a convenient starting point for this circular route.
While La Gomera generally welcomes dogs on trails, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or livestock. Some sections of this moderate trail, particularly the steep descent through Barranco de los Guanches, may be challenging for some dogs, so consider your pet's fitness level.
The Canary Islands enjoy a mild climate year-round. However, the cooler months from autumn to spring (October to May) are generally ideal for hiking, as summer can be quite warm. Always check local weather forecasts before you go, as conditions can vary, especially at higher elevations.
No, you do not need a permit or have to pay an entrance fee to hike the Ermita Santa Clara circular trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll start on cobbled streets and rural paths in Vallehermoso, then ascend through the Barranco de la Era Nueva with its unique vegetation. Higher up, you'll encounter dense fayal-brezal forest, well-defined paths bordering the coastline, and dirt tracks. Be prepared for a more demanding, steep descent through the Barranco de los Guanches.
You'll be treated to magnificent views throughout. Early on, enjoy splendid vistas of Roque Cano. From the Santa Clara Hermitage, panoramic views unfold across the Atlantic Ocean, the dramatic Arguamul cliff, and on clear days, the distant island of La Palma. Don't miss the Views from Alto del Lomo Flores, and you might even spot Mount Teide on Tenerife in the distance on very clear days.
The Santa Clara Hermitage is a great spot for a break, offering a viewpoint and a shady rest area equipped with tables, benches, and grills. While there are unique structures designed to collect water from trade winds along the path, it's always recommended to carry sufficient water for your entire hike, as these are not reliable drinking sources.
Yes, this route covers significant portions of other official trails. You'll find yourself on sections of Ruta 04 (85%), Camino Natural Costas de La Gomera - Etapa 3 (24%), and Ruta 07 (24%), among others. This means you might see signage for these routes during your hike.
Given its moderate difficulty and varied terrain, we recommend sturdy hiking shoes, plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and layers of clothing as temperatures can change. A first-aid kit and a fully charged phone are also advisable. Trekking poles can be helpful, especially for the steep descent.
This trail is classified as moderate, requiring good fitness and sure-footedness. While parts are accessible, the steep descent through Barranco de los Guanches can be challenging. It might be suitable for families with older, experienced hiking children, but it's not recommended for very young children or those new to hiking due to its length and demanding sections.
Yes, Vallehermoso Village offers several options for cafes, restaurants, and local shops where you can grab a bite before or after your hike. It's a great place to experience local cuisine and relax.
A very nice and somewhat difficult excursion, especially the descent through the ravine, with steep sections on a rocky path. Even so, magnificent landscapes that mix ravines and hills with views of the sea. In Vallehermoso we finished at the Bar Carraca. Excellent.
After the rest stop, I of course switched the tracker back on too late. The route naturally followed the path (indicated by the dashed line) :)
Due to the fog and a storm with heavy rain a few days before, the descent was extremely exciting. There were few shoe prints from hikers who may have walked this very steep descent before us and so it was not clear to us whether the path had perhaps slipped. When we passed a hermitage house in nowhere and there were tracks my pulse went back to normal. Great round. Unfortunately we had no visibility.
Many thanks again to Monika for planning the tour. It was just beautiful ☺️👍👋
