Néouvielle Tour

Hiking

This pretty route forms a series of two loops which offer a nice summary of the diversity of the Néouvielle reserve. The route includes a lush forest, passes, lakes and one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the reserve: the Aubert Hourquette.

From Lake Orédon, you take the classic path which leads to Lakes Aubert and Aumar. Along the way, you cross the forest before reaching Laquettes, which offers an enchanting atmosphere. Arriving at Lake Aubert you see your next objective in the distance, the hourquette of the same name. The path alternates between open and shaded sections. Don't forget to turn around before enjoying the breathtaking view of the Aumar and Aubert lakes. A final rocky portion leads to the pass where spectacular panoramas await you.

You then dive onto the north slope, in a beautiful descent which leads to Lake Estagnol then Lake Nère. The path goes around the latter in a very rocky section. Follow the cairns (small piles of stones) which guide you through this maze of rocks. When the path becomes clearer again, you begin the ascent towards the Col de Tracens which quickly connects with that of Madamète. Both offer spectacular panoramas of the Néouvielle reserve and its countless lakes.

You embark on a long and gradual descent which leads to your starting point. The route begins by following the picturesque little Gourg de Rabas before diving towards that of Aumar. From the Madamète pass, you are on the GR 10 trail. You follow its red and white markings to the Estoudou pass. Here, you have to turn off to undertake a fairly steep descent which goes deeper into the forest. A little further on, the trees part to once again present Lake Orédon and its parking lot.

Les Laquettes

Highlight • Lake

The laquettes are located below Lake Aubert, at an altitude of 2,085 meters. These are groups of small ponds and pools irrigated by winter snow and overflow from the surrounding lakes. However, these wetlands regularly dry up in summer. If California has its “thousand lakes” on the John Muir Trail, we have the lakes on the GR 10 and it is no less magical.

Hourquette d’Aubert

Highlight • Summit

La hourquette d'Aubert, which rises to an altitude of 2,498 meters, offers a beautiful overview of the Néouvielle reserve. It marks the end of your courageous ascent from Barèges, and the beginning of the descent towards the lakes. Those of Aubert and Aumar will open the ball.

Small clarification, an hourquette designates in Gascon, a succession of passes whose silhouette forms a fork. The term is mainly used in Pyrenean toponymy.
