Hiking

This route, without major difficulty, leads to the discovery of the Madamète lakes and their countless neighbors. From the perfectly equipped resort of Tournaboup, you set off for a spectacular immersion in the Néouvielle reserve.

The route begins at the station car park, before entering the superb Gaubie valley. There you find the GR 10 to enter this peaceful and preserved valley. Bridges and ruins bear witness to centuries-old pastoral activity as you advance. The slope gradually rises towards the Aygues Cluses refuge. Brand new, it allows you to refuel or fill up with water in a remarkable setting.

The climb continues and you quickly reach the Madamète lakes. Nestled at the foot of the mountains, their green banks contrast with the raw and rocky environment that surrounds them. A final uphill effort then leads to the Col de Tracens. The view of the Madamète lakes and the other slope rewards the efforts made to reach the highest point of the route.

The last portion of the route essentially consists of descending to return to the starting point in Tournaboup. Along the way, you discover an anthology of lakes: Nère, Tracens, Blanc and Dets Coubous. Be careful not to lose sight of the route in the rocky portions that border some of them. When you find the Gaubie valley, all you have to do is continue until the finish of the course.

Lac Dets Coubous

Highlight • Lake

The Coubous cabin is an open and unguarded refuge. It is located at an altitude of 2,041 meters on the edge of the eponymous lake.

There is very little wood around, so if you are planning to light a fire in the fireplace to warm up the atmosphere a little, we suggest you bring it from the valley. Which is also the general usage.

You can sleep up to 4-5 people there quite comfortably. From 6 you will have to tighten up a little, but at the same time it warms up.

Be careful, quite a demanding hike which can prove difficult for many.

I took some liberties on the course, which meant that it was not very conventional and that sometimes I had to turn around. Pay close attention to the marked trails if you don't like to struggle like me. My route includes a lot of scree, especially on the …
