Discover the best coastal scenery on the entire Moor to Sea Network on this classic ride between Whitby and the sweeping headland of Ravenscar, via Hawsker and Robin Hood’s Bay.

Robin Hood's Bay is one of the most beautiful coastal settlements in Britain - well-worth stopping for some tea and cake and a stroll on the sandy (supreme!) beach. In the summer months, you can get ice-cream on the beach - paradise!

The now out-of-use Hawsker station is one of a few disused stations on the way, all of which are very interesting! This entire route is now part of the ‘Cinder Track’, following the line of the former Whitby to Scarborough railway – it’s well signposted throughout. At the end of the route you cycle over the River Esk, high up on Larpool Viaduct, which seems far too grand for a cycle path but, of course, like the rest of the trail, it was originally designed for the railway.

There are many gorgeous views of the dramatic Yorkshire coast from the Cinder Track, but perhaps none as good as from the Brickyards Alum Quarry viewpoint, just outside Ravenscar.

Brickyards Alum Quarry Viewpoint

Highlight • Viewpoint

Next to the disused Brickyards Alum Quarry, just outside Ravenscar, there's a wonderful picnic table, beckoning you to stop here for a break, with truly marvelous views along the coast - both north towards Robin Hood's Bay and south to Ravenscar and Staintondale.

Lots and lots of gorgeous, rugged coastline and cliffs, and of course, the dazzling blue waters of the ocean!

The Cinder Track extends from Robin Hood's Bay to Scarborough along the coastline, almost completely traffic-free for 21.5 miles (34.6 km).

Running along the path that used to be home to the Whitby to Scarborough railway line until 1965, this now is a cracking place to explore for cyclists, runners and hikers alike.

Take extra care when busiest at the weekends at high season for families and dogs.

Bay Ness Barn

Highlight • Structure

Take a breather and stop near Bay Ness on the Cinder Trail. There's a number of benches provided on the track.

The lone barn in the fields near the cliffs is truly picturesque - the green grass contrasting strikingly with the blue of the ocean beyond it. A truly beautiful, relaxing spot.

This used to be one of the eight stations on a line between Scarborough and Whitby, but closed in 1965. Now, the buildings are owned privately, but Trailways offer some services - the train car is used as self-catering accommodation.

There's also bike hire here and tourist / visitor information. Refreshments are usually served inside the car too, although this is temporarily closed at present, so check before you go.

Larpool Viaduct

Highlight • Bridge

Larpool Viaduct, also known as the Esk Valley Viaduct, is a 13-arch brick viaduct, originally built to carry the Scarborough & Whitby Railway over the River Esk. It's now the route of the Cinder Track.
