The best of the Bayehon and Warche valleys – Grand Trail des Lacs & Châteaux

Running

This route is the middle distance of the Grand Trails des Lacs et Chateaux - winter edition. It is a demanding trail run with a succession of short intense climbs and technical singletrack descents. With its 22 kilometers and 600 meters of elevation (in reality, add a few hundred extra) it is the ideal trail run for anyone who wants to tackle a slightly longer distance, as well as for seasoned trail runners looking for a solid workout.

From the ski slope in Ovifat, just like with the routes of 12 and 37 kilometers, you immediately dive into the valley of the Bayehon valley, and then make the long climb towards the plateau of the High Fens. During the climb, the 'Cascade du Bayehon' is an unmissable stop. This 9 meter high waterfall, located at an altitude of 510 meters, is formed by the Bayehon River. It is the largest natural waterfall in Belgium and, due to its setting in this unspoilt piece of nature, perhaps also the most beautiful. A little further on you reach the highest point of the route at an altitude of 600 meters, which is located north of Longfaye. The route then winds in a descending line through the village of Xhoffraix until you reach the Warche river. From this point onwards there is a series of climbs and descents over the ridges of 'les crêtes de la Warche'. This challenging path leads you through the Warche valley, which is characterized by its lush forests and viewpoints with panoramic views.

The paths in the region often have covered picnic benches where you can rest or take shelter in bad weather. 'Le moulin du Bayehon' is located between kilometers 10 and 11 in the Bayehon valley. This attractive restaurant uses local products and is worth a stop. There is ample parking near the Ovifat ski slope, where the route starts and ends.

Bayehon Waterfall

Highlight • Waterfall

The Bayehon Waterfall is a roughly nine-meter-high waterfall near the Belgian village of Longfaye, situated at an altitude of approximately 510 meters. Fed by the Ruisseau de Bayehon stream, it lies within a deep, wooded gorge crisscrossed by attractive hiking trails. The waterfall is also easily accessible via the nearby Moulin de Bayehon watermill, making it particularly appealing to families, as parking is available and the mill offers friendly service. The Bayehon Waterfall is considered the highlight of the gorge and provides numerous picturesque photo opportunities.

View over the Warche Valley

Highlight • Viewpoint

This place used to be an elf forest with a winding path. It has now made room for new vegetation and it still looks a bit gloomy. Now you have a nice view over the valley and there is a picnic table. This place is along shorter walking routes that also pass the castle and can get busy.

Le moulin du Bayehon

Highlight • Restaurant

The Moulin du Bayehon with a small but nicely decorated restaurant and beer garden is located in a great landscape and invites you to linger. The very friendly and funny host has received us politely and well-hosted.

Great was the heated old stove in the middle of the taproom. Noteworthy are the total of 85 beers, including 6 on tap. More information at:
