The Lomba da Fazenda Trail is a circular route that generally takes between 2 to 3 hours to complete. This can vary depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views.
The trail offers a diverse experience, traversing coastal cliffs, quiet village roads, and lush forest paths. You'll encounter green pastures, sections with endemic vegetation, and areas with Japanese cedar wood, Australian Cheesewood, and Australian Blackwood, creating a sometimes jungle-like atmosphere. There are also dirt roads leading up cliffs through agricultural fields.
Along the route, you can enjoy expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean and volcanic cliffs. Key points include old watermills, a fountain dating back to 1982, and the natural swimming area known as Ribeira do Guilherme Natural Swimming Pool. You'll also pass by the Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição, Mosteiros and the Pelado Viewpoints, offering stunning vistas.
Yes, the trail is generally considered to be of easy to medium difficulty, making it suitable for most hikers, including beginners and families. While there are some ascending sections, it's not overly technical or exhausting, offering a steady walk.
The Lomba da Fazenda Trail is accessible year-round. Its diverse scenery and peaceful atmosphere make it a rewarding option in any season, though checking local weather forecasts before you go is always recommended.
The trail is located near Nordeste on São Miguel island. While specific parking lots aren't detailed, the route passes through quiet village roads, suggesting parking may be available in designated areas within Lomba da Fazenda or nearby villages. It's advisable to look for local signage or consult a map for the most convenient starting points.
Generally, trails in the Azores are dog-friendly, but it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers. Please be mindful of agricultural areas and livestock.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Lomba da Fazenda Trail. It is freely accessible to the public.
Yes, the Lomba da Fazenda Trail is often described as an 'underrated' and 'peaceful' hike. It features a hidden waterfall, traditional washing tanks at Parque da Morgada, and offers a blend of dramatic coastal views with glimpses into the region's historical elements, providing a comprehensive and tranquil experience away from more crowded routes.
For this moderate hike, we recommend bringing comfortable hiking shoes, water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a light jacket as coastal weather can change. A camera is also a good idea to capture the stunning views and diverse scenery.
Very nice coastal hike. Not too long and too strenuous. There are no special equipment or requirements. Whereby good non-slip shoes are an advantage. Especially the descent down the slope can be slippery. Down by the sea you can take a nice bathing break in the seawater pool. The subsequent ascent to the steep coast is exhausting, but rewards you with magnificent views. Unfortunately, here too, visibility on the slope is often limited due to thick vegetation. It offers protection from too much sun and helps everyone who is afraid of heights, but the real wow effects are avoided.
Fantastic hike in the north-east of Sao Miguel. Parking in front of the church. First we head towards the Atlantic past fields. The path quickly becomes a path and the adventure begins. Green on the left and right of the path with a view of the water. Some up and down passages trending down towards the coast at the beginning, then steep climb from the natural pool (10% incline). It then continues at the old water mill (next to the campsite). Here again a steep ascent on a well-developed path. After the tour, it's worth taking a look at the shop about 100m from the church. If you still fancy another little adventure, we recommend a visit to the Farol do Arnel lighthouse (parks upstairs. Nobody wants to go down there, let alone drive UP again. 20% incline) (my pro tip).
The descent into the river valley was nothing special; at the river crossing, the remains of an old watermill still stood, very much like a lost place. From the seashore, with its impressive waves, a beautiful path leads up and along the cliffs – a delight!
Goodbye 2021 - what a year! Around 230 active days and aiming for 300 in 2022. Happy New Year everyone! This coast trail was spectacular. Some tricky river crossings due to the heavy rain and storm yesterday but a great adventure. The natural salt water pool at sea level tempts me to come back in summer. And the sun ☀ said hello for the last day of 2021.
The area around the town of Nordeste was explored today in the most beautiful Azores weather. It went through a small rural village, across cow pastures and a great coastal trail to the sea pool, which to my regret was filled more with dirt and driftwood than water (see photo). David managed to refresh himself by taking a proper spray shower.
A really great tour that is really fun when there is a lot of wind at the natural pool 😉 However, I would modify the tour (if I run again) so that I park directly at the parking lot at the natural pool, the viewing platform above or at the viewing point above the cliffs. This saves you the journey back and forth through feeder roads and the city (unless you want to walk past the church or are lucky enough to meet a few chicks with their parents).
