This route was planned by komoot.
The Praia da Viola Trail is approximately 9.4 km long. While the komoot tour suggests a duration of around 2 hours and 54 minutes, the linear trail (about 5 km one way) can typically be completed in approximately 2 hours each way, depending on your pace and how much time you spend enjoying the scenery. Remember to factor in time for breaks and exploring the beach.
The trail follows an old coastal path, starting gently through farmland before descending towards the ocean. You'll encounter a mix of old stone paths, dirt trails, and potentially muddy or slippery sections, especially after rain. Some parts are narrow and steep, with a winding, steep path and stairs leading down to the beach. Sturdy shoes are essential for navigating these varied conditions.
This trail offers breathtaking coastal views and several notable features. You'll pass by the ruins of historic watermills, such as the Nateiro Watermills and Waterfall, and eventually reach the secluded Praia da Viola and the Watermills, a black sand beach with waterfalls cascading onto the shore. Further along, you can also find Calhau da Maia Beach. Keep an eye out for old washing tanks, offering a glimpse into the region's past.
The trail can be hiked year-round, but the best time is generally during the drier months to avoid muddy and slippery sections, especially on the steep descent to the beach. After heavy rainfall, the waterfalls are particularly impressive. The descent to the beach can be more challenging in winter due to potentially slippery stairs. For a more serene experience, consider visiting outside of peak tourist season.
The Praia da Viola Trail is generally rated as easy to moderate. While some sections are steep and can be slippery, especially the descent to the beach, it is manageable for those with good physical fitness. Families with older children who are accustomed to hiking and can handle varied terrain, including stairs, might enjoy it. Younger children or those with mobility issues might find the steep and winding sections challenging.
Information regarding specific dog regulations for this trail is not explicitly stated. However, as a general rule for trails in natural areas, if dogs are permitted, they should always be kept on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure the safety and comfort of other hikers. Please check local signage at the trailhead for any specific restrictions.
The Praia da Viola Trail is located within the natural beauty of São Miguel. Generally, there are no specific permits required or entrance fees to access the trail itself. However, it's always a good idea to check the official Visit Azores website (visitazores.com) for the most up-to-date information regarding any regulations or changes for the São Miguel Natural Park.
The trail primarily follows an old coastal path. While specific parking details are not provided, trailheads for routes like this typically have designated parking areas nearby. It's advisable to check maps or local information for the most convenient starting point and parking options before your hike.
Yes, while the main route is PR27SMI Praia da Viola, the path also briefly intersects with sections of the TM03 Barquinha and the PRC35SMI Moinhos da Ribeira Funda. Combining it with the Moinhos da Ribeira Funda loop can increase the difficulty due to steeper sections and unstable terrain.
Given the varied terrain, including potentially muddy and steep sections, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip are essential. It's also advisable to bring water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and rain gear, as weather can change quickly on the island. A camera is a must for the stunning coastal views and waterfalls.
The Praia da Viola Trail (PR27 SMI) is primarily a linear, out-and-back route. This means you will hike to a certain point, typically Praia da Viola, and then return along the same path. Some sources describe it as a 5 km (one way) linear hike.
First hiking day of our Azores hiking trip. Only a small tour today, as we arrived late last night. We stay for 2 days in Furnas, a volcanically active part of the island of Sao Miguel. After our hike in the north of the island we visited the only tea plantation with still working machines from 1888 and the hot springs of Furnas. Here the delicacy cozidos das Furnas was waiting for us. A stew that cooks in the hot earth for 7 hours. Delicious. Our first impression of the Azores. Great landscape, nice people, weather a bit of everything.
We made the rounds to Maia and ate there in the small restaurant with a sea view. The beach is simply gorgeous. There is also plenty of water flowing from the mountain, so you can take a good shower after swimming. On the way back we walked above the beach. The road to the starting point is very steep and uncomfortable to walk. But you can also drive to the beach and thus shorten this part.
You need sure-footedness, good hiking shoes (profile) and a certain level of fitness. At the end of the tour, there are what feels like an infinite number of steps. It may be advisable to do the tour the other way around, since the destination is then lower than the starting point - the ascent is then correspondingly less arduous. However, for me with knee problems it was cheaper as described as I was able to walk up and not down the steps.
Fantastically beautiful coastal hike! 🌿🌳🌊☀️🌺... on a beautiful forest path down to the coast... past waterfalls... over a secluded stretch of beach... again on a great hiking trail further along the coast. Great! We will always remember this hike fondly! 😃
After yesterday's rainy day, the new day, which was also our last day of the trip, greeted us with sunshine, and it stayed that way throughout the day. The scenic tour took us past a dilapidated watermill, first through the forest, and then with magnificent views of the cliffs and the Atlantic. We even enjoyed a cool dip in the sea and a delicious meal at Maja's. The beautiful day was rounded off with a visit to the tea plantation and a stop at the viewpoint overlooking Furnas and the lake of the same name. Thanks to our guide Marcel from MiTourA.
Between the scent of meadows and forest air The varied landscape is a paradise for hiking enthusiasts. On this picturesque path you pass several watermills. The path deserves the description "challenging". Mostly forest paths. The path is uneven and can be slippery and muddy. Sturdy shoes with sufficient tread and weatherproof clothing are required. The weather can change quite quickly.
