This trail is generally considered of medium or moderate difficulty. While it's a rewarding hike, be prepared for some challenging sections, including steady climbs, steep slopes, and potentially muddy areas, especially along the levada sections and near the lake.
The Praia - Lagoa do Fogo Trail (PRC02SMI) is typically described as a circular route that begins in Praia and leads to the shores of Lagoa do Fogo. However, some sections might be treated as out-and-back depending on your specific hiking plan.
The trail officially starts in Praia. Parking information can be found on local government websites like azores.gov.pt or visitazores.com. It's advisable to check these resources for the most current parking regulations and availability near the trailhead.
The trail offers diverse terrain. You'll encounter dirt paths through farmland, dense forests of Japanese Cedar and endemic plants, sections along a 'levada' (irrigation channel) which can be muddy, and a volcanic plateau with rocky rim sections closer to Lagoa do Fogo. Some parts may involve loose gravel and steep, slippery slopes.
Highlights include a Beautiful path along the Levada, the Water Collection System of Lagoa do Fogo, and the stunning Lagoa do Fogo (Lagoon of Fire) itself. You'll also enjoy panoramic coastal views, lush forests, and pass by historical ruins of an old factory.
Yes, while primarily following the PRC02SMI Praia - Lagoa do Fogo route, this trail also briefly intersects with sections of the PR39SMI Quatro fábricas da Luz trail.
The best time to hike is generally during the drier months, though weather on São Miguel can be unpredictable. Views of Lagoa do Fogo are highly dependent on clear skies, as clouds and fog can obscure the lake at its high altitude. Always check local weather forecasts and webcams before heading out.
The trail is located within a Natural Reserve. Regulations regarding dogs in protected areas can vary. It's best to check the official guidelines on the azores.gov.pt website or with local tourism offices to confirm current rules regarding pets on the trail and within the Natural Park.
The Praia - Lagoa do Fogo Trail is located within the São Miguel Natural Park, which is a protected Natural Reserve. While there isn't typically an entrance fee for the trail itself, it's always recommended to check the official azores.gov.pt website for any specific regulations, permits, or changes to access policies for protected areas.
Given the varied terrain and potential for mud, trail shoes with good grip are essential. A windbreaker is advisable, especially near the exposed rim of Lagoa do Fogo. Bring sufficient water, as there are no reliable treated water sources on the main climb. Snacks, sun protection, and rain gear are also recommended.
The views of Lagoa do Fogo are highly dependent on weather conditions; clouds and fog can quickly obscure the lake. For the best chance of seeing the stunning lagoon, check webcams and local weather forecasts immediately before you head out. Also, remember that the PRC02SMI trail is the only legal access to Lagoa do Fogo from Praia.
A very nice tour, initially quite ascending, but which led "into the cold fog". The hiking trail was in great shape and wonderfully overgrown by the flowing water (they also call it Lewada as in Madeira). There were also breeding seagulls to discover♥️. Anyway, highly recommended
Hike made with the 2 children 8 and 10 years old. Departure at 9:45 in the morning
Our first group hike was a one-way tour, following the same route there and back. The first climb was quite steep, through stands of trees some of which were unfamiliar to us: butterfly ginger, eucalyptus, Japanese cedar, and many others. The path became more comfortable along a levada. We continued along a valley where the water streams from the sides were collected. Then another climb, and we were able to look out over the large crater lake; none of us had expected it to be so large. There are no large wild animals on the islands, and the small ones were unafraid. Then we returned the same way. So much nature and so few people, a dream.
First on the well signposted hiking trail to Lagoa do Fogo after about 5.5 km. Then left up the mountain on narrow trails through the vegetation to enjoy an impressive view of the lake.
