The trail typically starts in Camorino. While specific parking details aren't provided, Camorino is a good starting point for accessing the Fortini della Fame. Look for local parking areas within the village.
The trail offers a varied terrain, winding along the scenic Camorino hill. You'll encounter a mix of paved roads and natural trails, leading through picturesque vineyards and peaceful woods.
The main historical attractions are the "Fortini della Fame" (Hunger Fortresses). You'll pass by several of these cylindrical defensive towers, including Fortini della Fame – Tower 2 Ai Munt, Fortini della Fame – Tower 3: Ala Pélera, Al Pian di Bur Tower (Fortini della Fame No. 5), and Al Sass del Camósc – Fourth Hunger Tower. Explanatory panels provide insights into their 19th-century history.
The trail is enjoyable for most of the year. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful scenery, with vineyards changing colors. Summer can be warm, but the wooded sections provide shade. Winter hiking is also possible, weather permitting.
Along the route, you'll be treated to extraordinary panoramic views of the entire Bellinzona area, including the majestic Pizzo di Claro, and the vast Magadino Plain stretching towards Lake Maggiore.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through vineyards or near historical sites, and to be mindful of other hikers.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the From Camorino to the fortini della Fame loop tour. It is freely accessible to the public.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the European Long distance path E1 - part Switzerland, the Trans Swiss Trail, and the ViaGottardo, offering opportunities to extend your hike if desired.
Camorino, as a village, likely offers some local facilities. For a wider selection of cafes and restaurants, you might consider visiting nearby Bellinzona before or after your hike.
On the way to our TI holiday, we took a lovely walk to the 5 Fortini della Fame (Hunger Towers) above Camorino. The 5 Fortini della Fame (Hunger Towers) were built in 1853 as part of the Dufour Line of fortifications. Three are still well preserved or even renovated, while two are only ruins (walls without roofs). https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fortini_della_Fame https://www.fortini-camorino.com/de/home-de/ The weather was hot but very hazy due to the smoke from the Canadian smoky mountains. For once, relaxing without a bike 😉
