Hiking

The Sound of Silence Trail delivers what it promises: abundant tranquillity and unique views. On this 5-kilometre (3 mi) loop, you can explore the geology of the Dinosaur National Monument and enjoy breathtaking views of the gleaming white Split Mountain. If you like, you can combine the Sound of Silence Trail with the Desert Voices Trail to create a loop of around 9 kilometres (5.6 mi).

You’ll start at a small car park, where an information board provides you with the most important facts about the trail. Right next to it, there's also a box with a leaflet about the Sound of Silence Trail, which explains the various stations along the way. You’ll walk over sandy, stony ground into a beautiful rocky landscape. In places, you’ll walk through a dried-up stream bed, which can sometimes turn into a small river during heavy rainfall.

After 3 kilometres (1.9 mi), you’ll have a great view of the so-called Racetrack. The racetrack-like rock formation was formed in the Triassic period between 251 and 201 million years ago. Just shy of a kilometre further on, you'll come to the connecting path to the Desert Voices Trail. Here, you can decide whether to add another 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) to your Tour or walk back to the car park.

Sound of Silence Trail

Highlight • Trail

The Sound of Silence Trail is a 3.2-mile roundtrip with about 400 feet elevation change. It winds through an intermittent creek bed, a so-called wash, and shows you the diverse geology with rock layers, desert badlands and steep slickrock. You will be treated with excellent views of Split Mountain and an area called the Racetrack. Some sections of the trail can be difficult to navigate. If you like to extend your hike, take the short connector trail to combine this trail with the Desert Voices loop trail.

On the higher section of the Sound of Silence Trail, you can enjoy a stunning view of Split Mountain and an area known as the Racetrack. The Racetrack was formed by the Triassic period Chinle and Moenkopi Formations.

Trail Reviews

Terra Nova
September 24, 2024, 🇺🇲 Dinosaur National Monument: Sound of Silence Trail

The trail is really beautiful. Unfortunately there is no shade. The wash is not as big and impressive as the one in Canyonlands NP, but the colors and rock formations are extraordinary. Walk it clockwise. The signage in the other direction is bad and the path is sometimes hard to find despite GPS.
