Hiking
The trails in the impressive Box and Hog Canyons are a short journey through time and reveal the story of a fascinating woman, Josie Morris. You can combine the two short trails or hike them separately. They are flat and make a great family outing. Both start at Josie's old cabin, where she lived in complete seclusion from 1913 to 1964.
The Box Canyon Trail is significantly shorter at just under 1 kilometre (0.6 mi). It leads you into a narrow canyon with towering rock faces, where Josie Morris used to herd her cattle. You’ll walk among fragrant sagebrush – a type of desert mugwort – and past sandstone formations that have been moulded by the elements over thousands of years.
If you choose the Hog Canyon Trail, you'll discover an old chicken coop that belongs to Josie's cabin and hike out into open grasslands, past a babbling brook and into beautiful Hog Canyon. There are also a few information boards to read along the way.
