This route was planned by komoot.
This loop is rated as difficult. It requires good physical fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy hiking shoes. Some sections, especially the optional climb to the Wandflue Summit, can be technical and involve scrambling over gravel and rocks.
The full loop typically takes between 4 to 5.5 hours to complete. If you choose to hike the entire route without using the chairlift from Jaun, it can extend to about 6.5 hours.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll encounter wide paths, dirt trails, rocky sections, grassy slopes, and gravel. There are steep climbs, particularly to points like Wolfsort, and the path winds through alpine meadows and light forests before opening up to dramatic limestone cliffs.
The trail offers spectacular, ever-changing views. Key highlights include the dramatic Gastlosen chain itself, the Alpine Panorama, and specific viewpoints like the View of the Gastlosen. You'll also pass the Wandflue Summit and a unique Rocky Fissure View. From various points, you can see the Bernese Alps and Valais 4,000-meter peaks.
The starting point for the hike is often at Musersbergli. You can typically find parking in Jaun, from where you can take the chairlift up to Musersbergli to begin your hike.
You can reach Jaun by public transport. From Jaun, a chairlift provides access to Musersbergli, which is a common starting point for the panoramic loop, allowing you to bypass a significant initial ascent.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the region, given the difficult rating, varied terrain, and potentially technical sections, this specific loop might be challenging for some dogs. Always ensure your dog is fit for such a hike and keep them on a leash, especially in alpine pastures and near wildlife.
The best time to hike this trail is typically during the warmer months, from late spring to early autumn (June to October), when the snow has melted and conditions are generally stable. Always check local weather and trail conditions before you go.
No specific hiking permits or entrance fees are required to access the trail itself. The trail is located within the Parc naturel régional Gruyère Pays-d'Enhaut, which focuses on conservation and sustainable tourism, but does not charge an entry fee for hiking.
Yes, there are mountain refuges along the way. You can find opportunities for refreshments and traditional Swiss specialties at places like Chalet Grat and Chalet du Soldat.
Yes, you can significantly reduce the strenuousness of the hike by utilizing the chairlift from Jaun to Musersbergli. This cuts out a considerable portion of the initial ascent and final descent, making the panoramic loop more accessible while still allowing you to experience the stunning views.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with other official trails. You will find yourself on parts of the Freiburger Voralpenweg, Oberer Sattel, Unterer Sattel, and Gustiweidli trails, among others, during your hike.
Chair lift closed today due to maintenance work until the end of this week at the beginning of October 2023. We drove up to the barrier-free parking lot. Hike very varied. It has everything a hike offers, including a little scratching😅. On the way back we stopped at the Solatenhaus. The worst part was behind us. Simply fantastic 🤩
BEAUTIFUL WALK, MAGNIFICENT LANDSCAPE, STILL A BIT SPORTY
Terribly beautiful, difficult hike around the Gastlosen chain.
Very demanding tour, altitude meters are not recorded enough in the Komoot...clearly not suitable for people with knee problems! But it's worth it!!!😊
My tour around the Gastlosen follows the SchweizMobil-Weg 262 (https://schweizmobil.ch/de/wanderland/route-262), but it has an altitude of 200 meters more... The tour is very varied and panoramic, leads through wild forests, over well-kept alpine meadows and over rocky paths, always along the Gastlosen with its steep limestone walls, the Grandmother's Hole (a rock window) and the jagged rocks. Some sections, especially between the soldier's house and Wolfort, are very steep and somewhat exposed. Although the temperatures are mid-summer, it is unmistakably autumn. On the one hand, the leaves are beautifully colored, but on the other hand, the position of the sun is already relatively low, which results in somewhat dark photos. Hopefully you can still see the beauty and charm of the tour.
With better weather than originally announced, we hiked around the Gastlosen climbing mountains. It goes up and down and several sections are demanding (big differences in height from step to step). Visibility was limited because of the clouds. But a worthwhile tour.
Beautiful walk lasting about 4 hours, 12km, around the Gastlosen. There is only one point that is a bit critical for vertigo sufferers, but doable. Better to leave early at 9 to go around calmly. The last chairlift that goes down is at 5.30pm. It's a very well traveled trek!
The starting point of the hike was the valley station of the Gastlosen-Express chairlift in Jaun. We were in the parking lot at 8:10 a.m. and were free to choose where to park. Nobody was there yet. For our loyal companion on mountain tours, dog Nero, the ride on an open chair lift was the premiere today. But he mastered it so confidently, as if he had never done anything else. Arrived at the mountain station, we started past the rustic Bärghus Musersbergli towards the soldiers' house. Don't miss the grandmother's hole! According to legend, the devil is said to have smacked his grandmother against this rock in anger. From the soldiers' house it went straight up steeply to Wolfs Ort, partly over stone blocks, but never dangerous. Back over the high path along the Gastlosenkette to Chalet Grat. From Chalet Grat the path led down steeply and in serpentines through forest with braided roots and partly over larger stones, in 1 hour back to the chair lift. This section was very wet and extremely slippery. A great and easy tour around the hospitable.
