This route was planned by komoot.
The popular loop trail starting from Noiraigue, which covers about 12 km with significant elevation gain, generally takes around 4 to 5 hours to complete. The total duration for this specific route is approximately 4 hours and 30 minutes.
The trail offers varied terrain. You'll encounter steep ascents, particularly on the challenging "14 Contours Trail" from Noiraigue, which can be rocky, slippery, and rooted. Some sections may be soft and sludgy after rain. Descents can also be steep and stony. The path includes natural, unpaved sections, as well as parts with asphalt, gravel, and paved surfaces. Caution is advised, especially in the Areuse Gorge and on slippery descents.
The absolute highlight is the Creux du Van itself, a massive horseshoe-shaped rock cirque offering panoramic views. Other notable spots include the Viewpoint over the Creux du Van, the beautiful Areuse Gorge with its rushing rivers and waterfalls, and serene forested areas. You might also pass by the Tank Barriers of Brigade Frontière 2 and the Ferme Robert.
This trail is generally rated as moderate to challenging due to its significant elevation gain (over 700 meters) and distance. The "14 Contours Trail" is particularly demanding. While some parts are easier, beginners should be prepared for strenuous sections and ensure they have appropriate gear, especially sturdy hiking boots with good grip.
The trail is best enjoyed from spring to autumn. During these seasons, the weather is generally more favorable, and the paths are less likely to be icy or covered in deep snow. While winter hiking is possible, certain areas along the cliff edge may be closed due to ice, and conditions can be much more challenging.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the Creux du Van Trail. However, as the entire area is a protected nature reserve, it's crucial to keep dogs on a leash to protect the diverse wildlife, including ibex, chamois, and deer, which are frequently spotted.
No, there is no entrance fee or permit required to hike the Creux du Van Trail or to access the Réserve naturelle du Creux-du-Van. However, as it is a protected nature reserve, visitors are expected to respect the natural environment, stay on marked paths, and not disturb wildlife.
The most common starting point for the loop is Noiraigue, where parking options are available. For a less strenuous experience, you can drive closer to the viewpoints near Le Soliat restaurant, which offers parking and a shorter walk of about 300-400 meters to the main viewing areas.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Jura Crest Trail (63%), European long distance path E4 - part Switzerland (63%), and the Sentier des 14 Contours (21%).
The Creux du Van area is a protected nature reserve, making it a crucial habitat for diverse wildlife. You have a good chance of spotting ibex, chamois, deer, and marmots in their natural environment, especially at higher elevations and near the Creux du Van itself.
Yes, there are a few options. You can find the Buvette des Oeillons — Snack Bar, Farm and Animal Park and the Ferme Robert. There's also a Forest fountain with fresh drinking water available on the route.
Creux du Van - simply beautiful in both summer and winter! The trail is also doable in snow (at least currently) without snowshoes, but when you get to the top you sink deep into the snow without it.
Standard route from Noiraigue to the Creux du Van. Ascent in about 2 hours. The descent is then rather uncomfortable because of the slippery ground. Sore muscles ahoy.
Wonderful round over the Creux de Van, which we will certainly repeat (several times)!! Worthwhile for panorama fans, flower children, animal lovers and lovers of hearty hut stops. Not difficult but not without effort, hiking poles make it easier 😉 The accessibility via Biel and Neuchâtel by train is great, but it gets very crowded if you don't get there super early. We walked anti-clockwise, which was unfortunately quite unfavorable for photographing the steep face. So next time we will go clockwise and leave a bit earlier as well. As expected, the trail is very busy. Amazing that the stately ibex along the way was so tolerant 😍 At lunchtime there was a queue at https://www.lesoliat.ch/ In the afternoon it was contemplative and relaxed on the https://www.ferme-robert.ch Both are recommended!
At the highest point with a beautiful view of the mountains!
The weather was perfect for the Grand Canyon of Switzerland - apart from the wind, which was almost frosty for the time of year. We were lucky with the Capricorn family right in front of our noses. A very nice encounter.
From Noiraigue, the path goes up the forest towards Les Oeillons, where you can stop for a snack. Now comes the more beautiful ascent on a natural path to the high plateau of the Creux du Van. After a delicious cold plate at the Ferme du Soliat, we enjoyed the beautiful views of the Grand Canyon of Switzerland 😉 We continued walking to the "mountain peak" of Le Soliat, where we enjoyed some more beautiful landscapes. We return to Noiraigue down via Fontaine Froide and La Ferme Robert.
The Creux du Van had been on our list for a while. Since we were traveling to Lake Neuchâtel for a festival anyway, we left a day early to tick another box off our list. We took it easy in the morning and didn't start hiking until 9:45 a.m. from Noiraigue. We arrived at the top of the Creux du Van at exactly 12:00 p.m. and walked to the restaurant. The menu was short and concise, but it quickly became clear that we were going to eat fondue in over 30°C heat 😅. Full of food, we continued along the top of the Creux du Van, finally heading back down the other side towards the valley. A great circular hike in the Grand Canyon of Switzerland.
A particularly impressive circular hike on the spectacular "Grand Canyon of Switzerland": the Creux du Van. A natural rock arena in the Val de Travers with enormous dimensions: 160-meter-high, vertical rock walls enclose a valley basin that is four kilometers long and about one kilometer wide.
