It's advisable to check local information on Corvo Island for the most current parking arrangements and trailhead access points, as public transport options might be limited.

What can I see along the Caldeirão Trail?

The main attractions along this route are the stunning natural features of the Caldeirão crater. You'll be treated to an incredible View of the Caldeirão do Corvo, offering panoramic vistas into the ancient volcanic caldera. Inside the caldera, you'll also see the serene Lagoa do Caldeirão, a beautiful lake formed within the crater.

What is the terrain like on the Caldeirão Trail?

Layers of clothing are also advisable.

This hiking trail is one of the most beautiful in the Azores. The beautiful color combinations can only be enjoyed when there is no fog. You should keep your distance from the cows.

Today we went to the northernmost and smallest island of the Azores, Corvo. Corvo itself has only 430 residents, all of whom live together in the only town on the island near the harbor and airport. The residents don't have to worry about aircraft noise, as only small planes from the other Azores islands land on the 840m runway. The shortest scheduled flight goes to the neighboring island of Flores and takes 8 minutes. 🛬 Today we decided to take the boat option, which was very adventurous. (Flying there and back in one day would not be possible anyway) No boat has sailed in the last few days due to the weather conditions and the rough sea. When we were out on the speed dinghy today, I knew why. When we went whale watching on Terceira, the speedboat sometimes went over 60 km/h. Today it felt like we were crossing a field at 25km/h. The waves were so strong that the boat jumped a lot and sometimes landed very hard back on the water. If you like it, it was fun. 😁 For everyone else it probably wasn't the same experience... On the return trip we had much better conditions and this took us along the coast of Flores so that we could admire six waterfalls that lead directly into the sea 🌊! 🤩 Now to our tour on Corvo: The island offers a caldeira that is one of the most impressive in the Azores. And the only longer road on the island leads from the only town to the only crater, which measures 3.5 km in circumference. Normally all craters are called "Caldeira", but this one has been given the male form "Caldeirão" (perhaps because of its size). 💪🏻 We hiked down into the crater and did an inside lap around the lakes, so to speak. The landscape was again absolutely unique and seemed a little surreal, like the whole island, with its small size and few inhabitants. You can get a good impression of the crater with this short video: https://www.relive.cc/view/vQvyopnJxK6 You can get an overview of the entire day including the speedboat tour here: https://youtu.be/uacCYBugXvU?si=AHqC8l8xsT6NQr0E I also added a few pictures of the boat trip and one of the “town” on Corvo to this tour.
