This route was planned by komoot.
The trail conveniently starts and ends near the charming village of Achouffe, which is also home to the famous La Chouffe brewery. You can typically find parking available in or around the village, making it easy to access the trailhead.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially given the presence of wildlife and other hikers. Be prepared for varied terrain, including potentially muddy sections.
The trail can be enjoyed throughout much of the year. Spring and autumn offer vibrant colors and pleasant temperatures. While possible in winter, be prepared for potentially icy or very muddy conditions. Summer is also popular, but the shaded sections provide relief from the sun.
No, there are typically no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail within the Parc Naturel des Deux Ourthes. Access to the natural park is generally free, allowing visitors to enjoy its beauty without charge.
The terrain is varied, featuring natural and unpaved paths, some dedicated hiking trails, and smaller sections of paved road. You'll walk through shaded undergrowth, dense forests, and along the Ruisseau de Chevral and Martin Moulin streams. Be prepared for potentially muddy and wet conditions, especially after rain, and some sources mention a 'big climb and a good descent' with 'more difficult passages'.
Along the route, you'll encounter several interesting features. These include Trout breeding ponds, evidence of Beaver dams and lodges along the streams, and the historic Wilogne Mill. The trail also offers a Beautiful trail along the stream, showcasing the picturesque Ardennes landscape.
This loop trail is approximately 5.26 km (3.27 miles) long. Most hikers complete it in about 1 hour 27 minutes to 2 hours, depending on their pace and how often they stop to enjoy the scenery.
Yes, while primarily following the 'Vallée des Fées' trail (100% of the route), this loop also intersects with sections of other official trails. You'll find it briefly crosses parts of the TransArdennaise VTT, Ourthe Superieur 2, Ourthe Superieur 4, and Les Cerfs trails.
The trail is generally considered easy to intermediate, making it accessible for many. However, some sections can be challenging with 'more difficult passages' and potential mud. For families with children, it's advisable to wear sturdy, waterproof footwear and be prepared for varied terrain. The shorter distance and interesting features like beaver dams can make it an engaging walk for kids.
Given the varied terrain and potential for mud, especially along the streams, waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended. Dress in layers suitable for the weather, as conditions can change. Bringing water, snacks, and a camera to capture the scenic beauty and wildlife is also a good idea.
This trail is notable for its blend of natural beauty and local charm. It starts and ends near the famous La Chouffe brewery in Achouffe, offering a chance to combine hiking with a local beer tasting. The valley itself is steeped in folklore, with legends of fairies and gnomes, adding a magical touch. You also have the chance to spot beaver activity and enjoy the quintessential Ardennes landscape.
Very nice tour through the Ardennes. The last third of the route is very difficult due to heavy rain and wind throws. The route can hardly be seen in places. High shoes are recommended and you should be sure-footed. In terms of landscape, however, this piece in particular is very attractive.
Very beautiful but difficult/slightly dangerous in some places. Still a beautiful walk and I will definitely do it again
Enjoy playing clay along the Ruisseau Moulin Martin, thanks to the beavers and of course the wet weather. This bank is difficult to navigate in winter after a wet period, but very nice!
Had a wonderful weekend with my sports club and ended with a nice walk in Achouffe.
Today we went looking for fairies and gnomes in Achouffe. A beautiful and adventurous walk written by Pasar. The picturesque village of Achouffe, part of Houffalize, is hidden deep in the 'Fairy Valley', which, according to legend, is also home to gnomes. We did not encounter any gnomes but enjoyed the beautiful fairy valley to the full. The walk was quite adventurous and at times tough: many hiking trails were 'absorbed' by the water, so we had to look for alternatives: make a bridge yourself with tree trunks, climb over the rocks, occasionally walk through the water,...
