The Maboge loop conveniently starts and ends in the center of La Roche-en-Ardenne. You can find various parking options within the town itself.
While the trail is generally accessible, it's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash, especially given the diverse terrain and potential wildlife in the Parc Naturel des Deux Ourthes. Be prepared for some steep sections that might be challenging for smaller or older dogs.
The trail offers beautiful scenery year-round. Spring is particularly vibrant with broom bushes turning the Cresse du Corbeau bright yellow. Summer allows for a refreshing dip at Plage de Maboge. Autumn brings stunning fall colors to the forests. Always check local weather conditions before heading out.
No, there are typically no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Maboge loop or access the Parc Naturel des Deux Ourthes. However, always respect local regulations regarding nature conservation.
The terrain is quite varied, offering a rich experience. You'll encounter unpaved paths, asphalt, gravel, and natural forest tracks. Expect ascents and descents, including a notable steep and narrow descent into Maboge. Sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended.
The trail offers a rich tapestry of Ardennes landscapes. You'll enjoy regular views of the meandering Ourthe River and excellent vantage points, including a View of La Roche-en-Ardenne and its castle ruins. Don't miss the Panorama Beaver Eagle for expansive vistas.
Yes, the quaint village of Maboge, situated by the Ourthe, is a natural stopping point. Here you'll find amenities like the Café Den Erpel, Maboge, a bar, and a chip shop. The 'Plage de Maboge' (Maboge Beach) also offers a refreshing spot to rest.
Yes, the 'Plage de Maboge' (Maboge Beach) is a popular spot for a refreshing dip in the Ourthe River during warmer months. It's a great way to cool off after a hike.
Yes, the route intersects with several other official trails. You'll find sections that overlap with the 6. Borzée, TransArdennaise VTT, Escapardenne Eisleck Trail - Etape 5, and GR 57 Sentier de l'Ourthe Parcours principal, among others.
The full route is typically well-marked with a red rhombus (number 6), making navigation straightforward for hikers.
The Maboge loop is generally considered a 'moderate hike'. Due to its length (around 13.7 km) and elevation changes (over 400m), it requires good fitness. While not overly technical, beginners should be prepared for a significant physical effort and some steep sections.
Very beautiful but also tough walk in terms of altitude. Maboge has a nice café 'den erpel' where you can get delicious beers and good food.
With a nice stop at '' den erpel '' for a drink
We recommend starting at the free parking lot (see photo and map). The trail is very beautiful and varied. Unfortunately, we didn't get the view of the Ourthe promised in the photos due to overgrowth 😅 but shortly before the end of the tour, you can at least catch another glimpse of La Roche, which was teeming with tourists when we returned. However, about halfway through the tour, there were beautiful ponds with plenty of plants and life, which made up for the lack of a view from the previous section.
Follow the red diamond with number 6. Good signage. Signage is only indicated in 1 direction. The descent just before Maboge is steep. Dangerous in the rain. Make sure you have good footwear. There is a cafe in Maboge and in Borzée that you pass by. The tourist office indicates that the walk takes 5 hours. So we did it in 3.5 hours + breaks. Good luck!
