Running

As its name suggests, the Frison-Roche is the emblematic distance of this trail meeting. With 44 kilometers and 2,900 meters of elevation gain, it's an opportunity to spend a great day running in the mountains.

Like the two smallest races of the event, a first loop discovers the hamlets located on the heights of Beaufort to the north. After a little over seven kilometers, you are back at the starting village. This is a good time to stock up on food and water, since the next resupply opportunity is located 30 kilometers further, in Arêches.

You then begin the emblematic climb of the race, which leads to the Parstire rock via the Col du Pré. These two highlights of the route offer sublime landscapes over the Arêches-Beaufort valley on the one hand and over Lake Roselend on the other. Arriving at the summit, you continue to be amazed by following a splendid ridge path to Cormet d’Arêches.

The pass announces the gentle descent towards Lake Saint-Guérin, where you cross a curious Himalayan footbridge. You are at the 32nd kilometer and you are tackling the last climb of the day, a small bump which increases altitude by 200 meters to reach the Cuvy plateau. You can guess Arêches there, which you reach after a steep descent.

You then have five kilometers to go. If you feel exhausted and your trail bag is empty, treat yourself to one last refueling before heading towards Beaufort. You can then replenish your calories as you should after this wonderful outing on the trails.

Roche Parstire

Highlight • Summit

Roche Parstire is the first summit on the soaring mountain ridgeline that runs between Col du Pré and Mont Coin in the Beaufortain massif. The trail that follows the ridge offers gloriously fun, fast, undulating running with amazing views in all directions.

The summit is marked with a cross and signpost and stands at 2,108 m (6,916 ft).

The Himalayan suspension footbridge that crosses the gorge at the southeastern tip of Lac de Saint-Guérin is a truly spectacular site. Spanning the turquoise waters of the lake between its rocky edges, it allows access to the southern end of the lake and the trails up towards Cuvy and the Grand Mont.

The bridge is constructed from steel grids, so you can see between your feet down to the sunken trees and rocks beneath the water. These are remnants of a former valley flooded to create a reservoir to provide hydroelectric power.

Le Cuvy

Highlight • Other

Le Cuvy is a high plateau at 1,700 metres, overlooking the village of Arêches. It's a tough, steep run up a grassy mountainside to reach it, but the trails are good and the views from the top are magnificent.

In July and August, the Grand Mont chairlift links the village with Cuvy for easy access to the high-level trails. This saves you about 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) in distance and 684 metres (2,245 ft) of ascent.

Arêches

Highlight • Other

Arêches is a village and ski resort in the Beaufortain, in the Savoie department of the French Alps. It's a great base for trail running, offering easy access to the mountain trails. There's a range of cafes, restaurants and shops in the village.

At just over 1,000 metres (3,281 ft), it's a good high-altitude training base, and home to several champion trail runners and ski mountaineers.
