Beautiful hike over a high plateau ... then Alte and Silves
A beautiful path up a mountain massif with lots of flowers and great views.
10/18/2024 Rocha da Pena plateau ***Just arrived in the Algarve... Since I left Faro airport at around 10:30 a.m. with my rental car, I had a few hours to bridge until I could check into my accommodation at 3 p.m. at the earliest. So I decided to head for an intermediate destination inland: the Rocha da Pena nature reserve. The nature reserve extends over a 2 km long limestone plateau that towers over the surrounding area by about 150 m. The highest point is the Talefe peak (480 m). To put it bluntly: the views of the lowlands are not very exciting. I haven't really figured out why the area is called Rocha da Pena, or "Rock of Punishment". Apparently the name is based on a tradition that Muslims fled to this inaccessible plateau after conquering the castle of Salir. However, historical remains such as the old defensive walls date back to the Celto-Iberian period.
It is best to follow the red and yellow signs of the PR 18 LLE!
Today's hike took us into the interior of the Algarve, untouched nature and a diverse sea of flowers, the plateau in bright sunshine offered us a memorable experience, and finally a short trip to a small original village where you think that time has stood still with a short Refreshment in an old village tavern.
Small climbing tour in Rocha de Pena: unbelievable variety of flowers, tough hiking trails, magnificent views. A climber was hanging on the mountain slopes, whom we later met with her two colleagues in the parking lot at the end of the tour. A small exchange of blows about their exciting hobby rounded off our adventure walk wonderfully.
