The main trailhead for the Fonte da Benémola Trail typically has a designated parking area. Look for signs indicating parking for the Fonte Benémola Local Protected Landscape. It's advisable to arrive earlier during peak seasons to secure a spot.
Yes, the Fonte da Benémola Trail is generally dog-friendly. However, please ensure your dog is kept on a leash to protect the local wildlife and respect other hikers. Always clean up after your pet.
Spring (March to May) is particularly beautiful, with an abundance of wildflowers and various orchid species. The presence of year-round springs makes it a lush oasis even in drier periods. Autumn also offers pleasant hiking conditions. While accessible year-round, river crossings might be challenging during winter or periods of heavy rainfall due to higher water levels.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to access the Fonte Benémola Local Protected Landscape or hike its trails. It is freely accessible to the public.
The trail primarily consists of dirt tracks. While the initial part to the springs is largely level, the circular circuit after the springs can include some inclines and rocky sections with loose stones and tree roots. You may encounter shallow river crossings requiring stepping stones or a small ford, which can be challenging during high water. Stout footwear is recommended.
The trail is renowned for its constant presence of water, a rarity in the Algarve. You'll discover the Source of the Benémola Stream, including 'O Olho' (The Eye), the largest of the springs. The area is a lush, verdant oasis with diverse plant life, including white willow, poplar, and fragrant shrubs, supporting a rich ecosystem.
The area is excellent for birdwatching, with over 100 species, including kingfishers, nightingales, and birds of prey. The pristine waters are home to fish, salamanders, frogs, toads, and two species of pond turtles, with otters also present. Keep an eye out for these creatures, especially near the riverbanks.
Yes, the trail showcases important cultural heritage. You'll encounter historical hydraulic structures like watermills, dams, channels, and ancient wells, some with Arab-inspired designs. Old lime kilns and the ruins of a water mill are also points of interest, reflecting the region's past land use and water management.
Yes, the Fonte da Benémola Trail (which is also known as PR16 LLE) covers 100% of the 'Fonte Benémola' route. It also passes through sections of the 'Via Algarviana - Ligação 2: Loulé - Salir' (93% coverage) and the '7 Fontes' trail (41% coverage).
Yes, there is a dedicated Picnic Area by the River at Fonte Benémola, perfect for a break. Restroom facilities might be limited, so it's advisable to plan accordingly.
Given the varied terrain and potential for rocky sections and river crossings, stout footwear with good grip is highly recommended. Bring water, especially on warmer days, and consider sun protection. Binoculars can enhance your birdwatching experience, and a camera will capture the beautiful scenery.
This morning we set off in the rain from Chipiona, heading towards Albufeira on the Algarve. Luckily the weather is better here, so before checking in we made a short detour into the "inland" to the "Benémola fountain". Nice, short hike, we had planned to make a detour to two caves, but they were mountain climbing paths, so I gave up. On the way back to the car park it was a bit overcast again.
Beautiful rocky hike with lots of greenery and a beautiful spring
A not very long but all the more beautiful hike, with picturesque paths. Only in the second third are sturdy shoes and a sure footing an advantage. There are no places to stop for refreshments along the route. In spring it is pleasantly sunny and warm. In summer it can be very hot. So make sure you take enough water with you, if only to save any frogs that have gotten lost 😅🐸 Afterwards, you reach Querenca in a few minutes, with a very beautiful church and a nice café.
