The full loop is approximately 47.5 kilometers (about 30 miles) and generally takes around 2 hours to complete for a racebike cyclist, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views.
Much of the trail is considered accessible and suitable for cyclists of all abilities who are in reasonable shape. However, be aware of a challenging 8% grade uphill for about half a mile on the Wisconsin side near the Stillwater Lift Bridge. This section is best tackled when you're feeling fresh.
The trails generally feature smooth pavement, making them ideal for road bikes. The Gateway State Trail has a wide, 'boulevard feel,' while the Brown's Creek Trail includes 'roly-poly bits with some fun dips and gentle curves' and a gentle climb out of the river valley. The new St. Croix Crossing Bridge features a wide, protected path.
You'll experience diverse scenery, from secluded, tree-covered sections passing through parks, lakes, and wetlands, to open countryside. The Brown's Creek Trail is particularly scenic, offering views into the woods and the creek below. A major highlight is the phenomenal views of the St. Croix River from 150 feet above the water on the St. Croix Crossing Bridge.
Key highlights include the Gateway State Trail, the Duluth Junction, the historic Stillwater Lift Bridge (now repurposed for non-motorized traffic), and the modern St. Croix Crossing Bridge, which offers impressive river views.
The loop is enjoyable throughout the warmer months. Many sections are shaded by overhead trees, providing a cooler ride during summer. Spring and fall offer pleasant temperatures and beautiful foliage. While winter cycling is possible, conditions can vary, so check local trail reports.
