This route was planned by komoot.
The Amoreira Beach Trail is approximately 7 to 8 kilometers (4.35 to 5 miles) long and typically takes between 2.5 to 3 hours to complete.
The trail is generally considered to be of moderate difficulty. While suitable for various fitness levels, some sections can be steeper or rougher, requiring sure-footedness. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
Yes, the Amoreira Beach Trail is a circular route, making it convenient for hikers as you end up back at your starting point.
Parking is readily available at the trailhead, which is easily accessible from the nearby town of Aljezur.
The trail offers highly varied terrain, including sand paths, firmer ground, gradual slopes, and some steeper, rougher sections. You'll walk along the Aljezur River, cross the spacious Amoreira Beach, ascend to cliff tops, and pass through inland areas and sparsely wooded pine sections.
You'll experience a diverse landscape, including an estuary where the Aljezur River meets the sea, creating a calm lagoon. Marshland areas are home to otters and various bird species like kingfishers and grey herons. The trail is also a "Biodiversity Station" known for butterflies and rare plants, especially in April. Look out for impressive rock formations and green slopes of fossilized dunes.
The trail is enjoyable year-round, but spring (especially April) is ideal for observing a variety of rare and endemic plant species and butterflies. Sunsets over Amoreira Beach are particularly spectacular.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the trail. However, as it passes through the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park, it's advisable to keep them on a leash to protect local wildlife and plants.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Amoreira Beach Trail or to access the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park. However, always respect local regulations regarding nature conservation.
Yes, the route is part of the renowned Rota Vicentina, specifically Route 16, also known as the Fishermen's Trail. It also intersects with sections of the Estação da Biodiversidade da Praia da Amoreira and the Historical Way.
Amoreira Beach offers a unique dual swimming experience: you can swim in the Atlantic Ocean, which has good waves for surfers, or in the warmer, calmer waters of the Aljezur River lagoon, making it appealing for families. There is also a restaurant located at Praia da Amoreira.
Since our accommodation only serves breakfast from 9:00 a.m., it was correspondingly late in the hiking boots. It all started at Praia do Amoreira near Rogil. A picture book beach. It was low tide. Now that we have decided on sections, you inevitably come through the hinterland of the coast or go back the same way. Today we followed one of the public circular routes of the Rota vicentina and this went through the hinterland. A mistake!!! Where there was once a forest, you can now walk through the sun on the popular sand without the magnificent views of the Atlantic. Almost at the end we went through a green valley smelling of blossoms and fennel with an abandoned village. Arriving at the starting point, the beach lay under a dense haze. A small consolation!! that the way back over the cliffs would also have been "hopeless". The rumor about tomorrow's rain persists. We'll see.
