The Gavarnie cirque is one of the most remarkable sites in the Pyrenees and France. Victor Hugo described it thus: “It is a mountain and a wall at the same time; it is the most mysterious building from the most mysterious of architects; it is the colossus of nature; it’s…

Too bad the weather was mixed for me, but superb hike! I didn't want to do like many, many people: take the central path, via the meadow. Too many people for me and there are better things to do. So I took a route that goes up the mountain on the left (the climb is steep), then we arrive at the Pailla chalet (closed this September). The flat or downhill path takes us to the side of the cliff (feeling dizzy for some, but nothing dangerous!)… very beautiful and superb views and no one!! After a while, we arrive at the Hôtel du Cirque, there is still the tough climb to the waterfall (the stone is very slippery and unstable)! Return partly by the central path then to the left on the other side of the mountain (no major interests except that there is no one). Best done very early! Strenuous walk in the pouring rain, but worth it!
