Hiking
In the Vienna National Park section you can immerse yourself in the very special flora and fauna of the Danube backwaters on the nature trail. Because where there used to be water-rich river arms, hotlands and moist depressions have now formed. And on this tour you will roam through this unique habitat, which is now even home to beavers.
The starting point of the nature trail is the Wien-lobAU National Park House. There you can stroll through the exhibition at the beginning and pick up the brochure that accompanies the tour. Then you first hike to Dechantlacke, an old-established natural bathing spot, where if you're lucky you might even see turtles.
The path crosses a small hot area, covered with magnificent orchids in spring, and continues to Josefsteg, which spans an oxbow lake. You walk past meadows, through a chestnut avenue, across fields and then along the edge of the forest to a viewing platform where you can watch water birds. We then go back to Josefsteg via another hot area and from there back to the Wien-lobAU National Park House.

The stations on the nature trail are marked with illustrated wooden pegs. Using the symbols, such as a butterfly or a frog, you can find the explanatory passages in the accompanying brochure. (Available in the nature park house) Unfortunately, the first two pillars were missing and one of them was missing the metal plate 😞.
Primeval forest in our latitudes? 🌳🍃🐸🦋 The floodplain landscape along the Danube between Vienna and Bratislava is one. The Danube-Auen National Park protects this pristine and biodiverse landscape. In 1984, the forests there were to be cleared to make way for a power plant, but thousands of people stubbornly occupied the Hainburg Au. A subsequent referendum called for the establishment of the national park - successful! The precious floodplains were saved. My route led through the Lobau, easily accessible by public transport from Vienna. I actually wanted to walk more kilometers, but I stopped so often, listening to the countless birds, observing butterflies, frogs, and turtles, and enjoying the energy of this ancient landscape. The Josefssteig, a circular trail from the Lobau National Park Center with viewing platforms, is ideal for an exploration tour. A wonderful place, a visit can easily be incorporated into a trip to Vienna! All information here: www.donauauen.at Directions: Bus stop "Raffineriestraße Biberhaufenweg"
We took the madame to Lobau today with a large pack of dog biscuits 🐶 Small but nice holiday round, nice and flat for the senior dog and bright sunshine for the food bowl filler 🍂🍁☀️ I'm so happy that the dog is reasonably good on foot again! Many more rounds in the national park want to be discovered 🌳
Nice evening stroll through the Lobau. Luckily on foot. Because it's unbelievable how many places they've put up bicycle bans. You really wonder what that's all about. 🤔 Conclusion: Speechless....
