This route was planned by komoot.
The full loop, covering approximately 14.6 km, generally takes around 4 hours and 6 minutes to complete. This duration can vary based on your pace, the number of stops you make, and trail conditions.
This trail is rated as moderate. While not extremely steep, it requires good fitness and sure-footedness, especially on sections with roots, rocks, and potentially slippery surfaces after rain. Beginners with some hiking experience and appropriate footwear should be fine, but it's not ideal for absolute novices.
The loop starts from Solwaster. You can find parking available in the village, which serves as a convenient starting point for this and other trails in the area.
The terrain is varied and picturesque, primarily following the Hoëgne and Statte rivers. You'll encounter a mix of unpaved paths, gravel, and natural surfaces. Some sections are technical single trails with many roots and rocks. There are also numerous wooden bridges crossing the rivers, and higher up, the scenery can transition to more open, swamp-like fields characteristic of the High Fens.
The trail is beautiful year-round, but spring and autumn offer particularly vibrant scenery with lush greenery or colorful foliage. Summer is also popular, but be aware that the trail can get crowded, especially on weekends and holidays. Winter hiking is possible, but conditions can be challenging with snow and ice, requiring appropriate gear.
This route is rich in natural beauty. You'll hike through the scenic Hoëgne Valley and along the Statte river, encountering numerous cascades and small waterfalls, including the unique Nutons Waterfall and the Hoëgne Waterfalls. You'll also pass the Trou du Loup Stream and the Waterfall on the Upper La Statte. Keep an eye out for the impressive Rocher de Bilisse, a 60-meter-high rock formation.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, given the nature of the Hautes Fagnes-Eifel nature park, it's always recommended to keep dogs on a leash to protect wildlife and ensure the safety of other hikers, especially in potentially crowded areas or near sensitive natural habitats.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for hiking this trail within the Hautes Fagnes-Eifel nature park. However, always respect local regulations, stay on marked paths, and be aware of any temporary restrictions, especially during hunting seasons or periods of high fire risk.
Yes, the route incorporates sections of several official trails, including parts of the 57. Solwaster - Statte - Bilisse - Dolmen, 55. La Hoëgne, and the GRP 573 Tour de la vallée de la Vesdre et des Hautes Fagnes. You might also encounter segments of the 56. Solwaster - Sawe and 58. Solwaster - Vecquée - Maison Fagne trails.
Solwaster is a small village, and while specific amenities might be limited, you can often find local establishments or cafes in the surrounding area to relax and refuel after your hike. It's a good idea to check local listings or inquire upon arrival for the most current options.
Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, sturdy, waterproof hiking shoes with good ankle support are highly recommended. Dress in layers suitable for changing weather conditions, as the High Fens can be unpredictable. Bring enough water, snacks, a map or GPS device, and consider trekking poles for stability on rocky or slippery sections.
This trail can be very popular, especially on weekends and holidays, leading to crowded conditions around key points like Pont de Belleheid. To enjoy a more tranquil experience, consider starting your hike early in the morning or visiting on a weekday. This allows you to fully appreciate the wild and romantic river valleys without the crowds.
In the valley of a thousand waterfalls - an unforgettable hike through the Statte and Hoëgne valley On a clear February Sunday, when nature is still resting in winter silence, we set off on one of the most beautiful hikes in Belgium. Our path takes us through the enchanted Statte valley and along the wild and romantic Hoëgne, always along the edge of the High Fens - a landscape that enchants with its rough beauty and untamed wilderness. After just a few steps, we are surrounded by the gentle sound of the water, which makes its way through the moss-covered rock bed in countless small and large cascades. The air is fresh and clear, the winter light breaks through the treetops and is reflected in the dancing whirlpools. Wooden walkways and bridges lead us over the babbling stream, while narrow paths wind along steep rocks. The path is challenging - we go up and down over roots and stones, but every look into the landscape rewards us with a new scene of rushing waterfalls, bizarre rock formations and the deep, mysterious forests of the Ardennes. At lunchtime we take a break in a particularly idyllic spot where the water glides gently over mossy stones. We enjoy the peace, listen to the quiet whispering of nature and let the moment sink in. The second half of the hike takes us further through the Vennland - a world of vast moorlands, gnarled trees and misty mountain ranges. There is a very special atmosphere here, a mixture of melancholy and endless expanse that touches us deeply. After many unforgettable kilometers our hike ends, our legs are tired, but our hearts are full of impressions - of rushing waterfalls, unspoilt nature and the unique magic of this landscape. The valley of the Statte and the Hoëgne has cast its spell over us and we know that this will not be the last time we will roam through this magical place.
A dreamy tour. Two mountain streams with countless small waterfalls, footbridges, and wooden bridges. The paths are largely riddled with roots, so surefootedness is required. Between the ascent and descent lies the truly enchanting Venn (fens). It's the first time I've seen cotton grass outside of the Alps. 😍
The rivers Statte and Hoëgne are very impressive, with a raised bog connecting them. Unfortunately, it started to pour with rain shortly after I reached the Hoëgne, so I opted for the wider hiking trail. Therefore, I also decided not to take any photos or videos.
I did this tour with Gitte and Margit a week ago as a pre-hike for my hike for the Eifel Club... and then unfortunately deleted the wrong part when cropping it 😁. That's why some of the photos from the pre-hike are included. The Rocher de Belisse was also climbed only one last time, otherwise it's exactly the same route (only the sun ☀️ was missing today). 15 people set off with me from the Belleheid parking lot, and to warm up, we immediately take the long, steady climb through the still-green forest. The ground is covered with colorful leaves, summer is over, and the temperatures are also autumnal. The landscape changes wonderfully: Forest, views of the Ardennes, the river Statte can first be heard and then delights our eyes, rushing and bubbling, until it narrows ever further to a small stream. A large tree has fallen, blocking the path (it wasn't there last week!) and requiring some climbing skills from us to continue. The rooty, rocky, and often muddy paths also demand our full attention. Then the Hoegne: roaring, raging, and foaming, abundant water from the recent rain pours over the thick stones of the streambed, plentifully plunging down the valley in endless waterfalls and cascades. A beautiful day with happy fellow hikers. Fun, adventurous, strenuous, and without a drop of rain!
Today I did a tour directly from my hotel in Hockai – the valley of the Hoëgne and Statte (recorded from a small forest parking lot). I highly recommend this tour. It leads through wild, romantic stream valleys with many small waterfalls, moss-covered rocks, bridges, and walkways. It also crosses a raised bog and through enchanting forests. It was simply fantastic and certainly not the last time I've been here. With the two small dogs, I naturally had to take more breaks than on a "normal" tour 😉. Nevertheless, the tour is very challenging, as you always have to watch your step. This was the second-to-last tour in Belgium for now. Tomorrow, but then, unfortunately, I'm heading home. I've discovered this region for myself and will definitely come back for a few more days 👍🏼⭐
🥵☀️ When the star is burning, the hiking tour should run better in the shade of the trees and past the 💦 water. Great when there are ice-cold isotonic drinks at the finish 🍻😉 Planned, done! We parked at the "Pont de Belheid" hiking car park - although the space is quite large, it is worth getting here in time to get a parking space. Right next door is a restaurant with a beer garden, in which we settled down after the end of the warm round. A nice goal 😉 Pretty adventurous for the whole family! From here you can hike various circular routes or just walk along the Hoëgne. Up to the "Pont Centenaire" you walk past several cascades of the Hoëgne and over countless bridges, roots, stones and boardwalks. The river bed is sometimes so shallow that it invites you to cool off your feet. The large boulders are nice resting places in the middle of the river bed. Despite the high temperatures, the hiking trail on the Hoëgne was quite crowded around 2 p.m. Getting here early is definitely worth it! Especially on the weekend 😉 It was nice 😎

Good footwear is a must and don't be afraid of mud. Very strenuous tour through the many roots and stones. You have to be in good physical condition. But scenically very nice 👍 👍. This is the only parking lot where you have to drive through the river beforehand. 👍 😆😆
