Attention: The Hohle Fels cave will be closed from Friday, February 6, 2026, through Wednesday, July 15, 2026. This closure is due to the establishment and construction of a nesting site for the common raven, a specially protected bird species. We kindly ask you to stay on the marked trail and not enter the closed area. The hike itself can be undertaken without further restrictions.
This approximately 23-kilometer circular hike offers pure summit enjoyment with stunning views and even more endorphins. As the name of the hike suggests, you'll have accumulated a significant amount of elevation gain by the end. Even if you don't have that much time, this hike can easily be divided into two parts for your planning. The northern section of the trail is slightly shorter at just under ten kilometers, compared to the southern section, which is just over 13 kilometers long.
You start at the train station in Pommelsbrunn and initially hike along the southern section to the Mühlkopf, the first highlight of the hike. From there, the trail continues up to the summit of the Hochberg. Along the way, you'll notice the information panels about the prehistoric Celtic acropolis on the Hochberg. The descent through the rock labyrinth leads through a wildly romantic section with bizarre rock formations, but requires sure footing.
The trail continues to the Arzlohe chapel ruins, the summit of the Kupferberg, and finally to the Hohler Fels viewpoint. The panorama over the Happurg reservoir and the surrounding area is sensational. Next, you'll reach the Houbrig ringfort, from which you have a fantastic view across to the Nordkette mountain range. Through Reckenberg and beautiful orchards, you'll eventually descend to Pommelsbrunn, where you can immediately join the hike on the Nordkette.
Leaving the village, you head northwest and ascend on a pleasant path to the Lichtenstein castle ruins. Take a break and enjoy the magnificent view of the Pegnitz valley. The trail continues through shady woods to the summit of the Leitenberg and then descends again. First, you'll hike through the forest with its wide clearings, then across meadows and finally through orchards.
Near Appelsberg, you'll climb again, cross the Hofberg hill, and enjoy the view from the Zankelstein. A short side path leads you to a magnificent viewpoint – you'll just need to be sure-footed.
From the Zankelstein, you can already see Pommelsbrunn, the destination of your hike. Just a short downhill walk and you'll reach the train station.

Even though I have already hiked a lot around Pommelsbrunn, the fantastic area with its steep climbs, narrow paths in the secluded forest and the magnificent views never ceases to amaze me.

I set off at around 6:30 a.m. knowing that it will be a sunny day. I have a two-hour drive ahead of me …
