Hiking

Do you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city after a day of sightseeing in Oklahoma City? Then this eight-kilometer loop is a good way to end the day. The route runs along Lake Overholser on the western outskirts of OKC.

You'll soon see the striking Lake Overholser Bridge in front of you. The structure, made of two different types of steel trusses, spans the North Canadian River. The historic Route 66 runs over the bridge, and it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Since 1958, the main traffic has flowed on a four-lane road further north.

The hike takes you further along the lake and Overholser Park to the dam, an impressive 21-meter-high structure. The Lake Overholser Dam marks the turning point of the tour. The way back is basically through the lake. To the left and right of the grassy path is the water - a wonderful section to switch off and let your eyes wander. In the distance you can see the steel bridge again in the light of the evening sun.

Lake Overholser Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Lake Overholser is an artificial lake created in 1916, which locals mostly call "Lake Hold Her Closer". In 1924 the then new steel bridge over the North Canadian River was built. It carried Route 66 until a new four-lane bridge was built a bit north in 1958.

Lake Overholser Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This eastern part of the Lake Overholser Trail continues all the way from the Lake Overholser Bridge to Lake Overholser Park at the dam. This path is completely paved and follows along the eastern banks of the waters. You can hop on the western trail at the dam, and this trail walks a grass path with water on both sides.

Lake Overholser Dam

Highlight • Monument

Lake Overholser Park is sandwiched between the end of the West River Trail and the start of the Lake Overholser Trail. The park has green space, a playground, restrooms, parking, and a few other features, but the main draw to the area is definitely the dam.

Lake Overholser Channel Embankment

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

This sort of "island walk" is a really cool grassy section of trail. There is water directly on both sides of the path, so it's impossible to not know where you're going when you're on this trail. It's cool to be able to kind of walk out into the water.
