This Tour tackles one of the most legendary and emblematic passes of the French Alps – the Col du Glandon. It’s a climb as challenging as it is captivating, which reveals the incredible landscapes of Savoie. The pass typically opens from late May onwards each year.
Your adventure begins from the Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne – Vallée de l’Arvan station, accessible in one hour by train from Chambéry. Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne lies nestled in the heart of the Maurienne Valley, the southernmost of Savoie’s major transverse valleys.
The initial stretch follows part of the Route des Grandes Alpes before crossing the Arc river and arriving at Saint-Étienne-de-Cuines. Here marks the start of the ascent to Glandon from the north: 20 kilometres (12 mi) of ascent, with an average gradient of 7%.
Halfway through the climb, take a moment to enjoy the terraces of the village of Saint-Colomban-des-Villards before tackling the final leg of the climb. Conserve some energy as, beyond the Glandon, you’ll continue to climb towards the Col de la Croix-de-Fer, located at 2,063 metres (6,770 ft), offering a panoramic view of the Aiguilles d'Arves.
The descent to Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne is the reward for your effort amidst a truly magical setting. Why not conclude your adventure with a final stop at the Opinel museum?
