Gravel route through the mines and mountains of Asturias

Gravel riding

The mountains of Asturias preserve an almost virgin landscape full of unforgettable postcards that overflow with greenery. For centuries, coal has been extracted from its bowels, the industry of which has spread an enormous mining heritage and culture. In this Route we propose an adaptation to the gravel of the cycling ring of the central Asturian mountain in which we have included river swims and an approach to the Nalón mining basin.

The route starts from Mieres, where you can easily reach by road or train. It is a demanding route thanks to the abrupt orography of Asturias that offers heart-stopping climbs and views that take your breath away. The adventure takes place on beautiful dirt tracks and some stretches of lonely roads, so you can complete it with a gravel bike and enjoy the challenge and the landscape.

Both the distance and the gradient are impressive, but you can always divide the route into more stages with the komoot planner. The ideal time to cycle through the Principality is from mid-spring to mid-autumn, remember to choose a sunny day, although it is wise to bring a raincoat, the rain waters the greenery almost daily. Finally, remember to bring some spare parts and bring enough food and hydration, although you will surely find where you can stock up on local products in one of the small villages.

Along this track that connects with Via Carisa, the views will leave you breathless. The altitude allows you to contemplate the landscape of the central Asturian mountain at its best. If you look down you see the intricate green valleys full of forests and alpine areas, always dotted with rural enclaves and meadows. If you look up you will see endless blue mountain ridges and, if you are lucky, you will also be able to see the huge exposed rock massifs of the Picos de Europa.
