Hiking

This relatively challenging route with a few meters of elevation takes you through the Ortenau mountains. The slopes of famous vineyards alternate with shady forest paths and fantastic views of both the Rhine plain and the Black Forest. If you love hearty food and spirits, you will feel at home here.

Your starting point is in the car park near the town hall in Waldulm. The Waldulm WZG bus stop is also nearby. You first pass the pretty half-timbered building of the winegrowers' cooperative, walk around the gravel works and hike through the valley behind it. It now goes steadily uphill through the forest. You climb the Kutzenstein on a ladder and then look forward to the wide views over the Waldulm vineyards.

At the so-called Schnapswurzel you treat yourself to an aperitif before you can have a hearty Baden lunch in the mountain restaurant Einkehr. But don't overdo it, it still goes uphill. At the Buchwaldhütte you have reached the highest point and on your way down you can admire sights such as the cute, crooked witch's house and the palm rock with a great view.

If you have enough energy, you can follow the interesting rock path from the hamlet of Blaubronn, otherwise you can go straight to the wonderful Backhiesel. Here there is a schnapps fountain, other fresh drinks and a few snacks. If you order in advance, you will be given an individual culinary hiking bag for the rest of the tour. If the weather is bad, you can hide in the rustic barn. The scenic mix of forest and vines will continue to accompany you until you arrive back in Waldulm at the small spa gardens.

The legend of the Kutzenstein

A long time ago, when the people of Waldulm built their church, which was one of the first in the region, the devil, who saw his property disturbed, was so angry about this work that he tried with all his strength to destroy it. But all his ruses failed. In his blind rage, he finally grabbed a huge boulder with his giant fingers and carried it from afar in order to destroy the hated building in one fell swoop.
When he reached the ridge and was about to throw it, a higher power that watched over the church forced him to let the stone fall. From then on, the devil gave up his fearless attempts at destruction. The holes in the boulder come from the devil's claws, which is why these depressions are called "devil's fingers".

The little witch's house stands beautifully crooked by the path and is perfect for a rest. Don't worry, no witch will lure you into the cottage. However, you'll find some information on an information board. Right next to the house is a giant witch's broom, which also doubles as a bench. Perhaps you have the right spell to make the broom fly?

One of the most beautiful places to stop off in the entire Black Forest! Always happy to come back. Especially with kids.

November 22, 2025, Kappelrodeck — Sentier d'altitude de Waldulm

A beautiful and fairly easy hike, except for the one long, drawn-out climb. We started in the fog, but the reward was beautiful sunshine when we reached the Palmfelsen at 690 meters altitude.

Set off towards Waldum under very grey skies, have been there many times and have been surprised every time. A beautiful route, started from Waldulm, steeply up to Backhisel and then further to Palmenfels, slowly reaching the highest point. A short break at "Zur Einkehr" with good prices and a delicious Keschde soup, it was worth it. Now just uphill towards Waldulm, now the sun is shining - well, when angels travel 😇. It was a great day for my work colleague who accompanied me too. 👍🌞😄 Time information is not correct again, we didn't run.
