Embark on a moderate hike along the Wisdom Tree, Hollywood Sign, and Lake Hollywood Loop, a 7.0 miles (11.2 km) route that offers a rewarding workout with iconic Los Angeles scenery. You will gain 1073 feet (327 metres) in elevation over an estimated 3 hours and 20 minutes. As you hike, you will experience panoramic views of the Hollywood Reservoir, downtown Los Angeles, and the San Fernando Valley. The trail brings you to the Wisdom Tree on Burbank Peak, providing 360-degree city views, and offers an up-close perspective of the Hollywood Sign from behind. You will also pass Cahuenga Peak, the highest point in Griffith Park, which provides expansive vistas.

When planning your visit, be aware that the initial climb towards the Wisdom Tree is steep and can be strenuous. It is advisable to wear footwear with good grip, as you will encounter loose dirt and rocks on the trail. The area is typically hot and dry with minimal shade, so remember to carry sufficient water to stay hydrated throughout your hike. Parking for the Wisdom Tree Hollywood Sign hike can usually be found near the trailhead, but it is always good to arrive early, especially on weekends.

This loop is notable for combining several of Los Angeles's most famous landmarks into a single, accessible hiking experience. Beyond the well-known Hollywood Sign, the trail also highlights the natural beauty of Griffith Park, offering a unique blend of urban views and natural landscapes. It provides a different perspective on the city, allowing you to connect with both its cultural icons and its surrounding environment. The route is a popular choice for those looking to combine exercise with sightseeing in a single outing.

Mulholland Dam

Highlight • Monument

Built between August 1923 and December 1924 the Mulholland Dam is a concrete-arched gravity dam. The dam was constructed purely to make new water reservoir for the City of Los Angeles, which often experiences water rationing droughts.

Cahuenga Peak

Highlight • Summit

Although Cahuenga Peak is the highest point in Griffith Park, it is mostly overshadowed by its slightly smaller neighbor, Mt. Lee, with its many antennas and the famous billboard that once advertised real estate sales in the hills above Hollywood. In fact, until recently, Cahuenga Peak wasn't even part of the park, but was previously owned by the Howard Hughes Estate for over 60 years.

Wonder View Trail, now also known as Aileen Getty Ridge Trail, is a narrow, rocky dirt trail running east from Mount Lee to Cahuenga Peak and ends at the Wonder View Road Trailhead. Starting with the Memorial for Playboy Founder Hugh Hefner, it has sweeping views all along, also passing Wisdom Tree and Tree of Life trail. Hefner saved the area twice: once with a fundraising party that helped to rebuild the collapsing Hollywood sign in 1978, and again in 2010 by contributing the final $900,000 of the $12 million needed by the Land Trust to buy and protect the land around Cahuenga Peak from real estate developers. Aileen Getty, Tiffany, Alice Cooper, Gene Autry and others also contributed to the trust.

Lake Hollywood Park

Highlight • Rest Area

This surprisingly large flat terrace in the Hollywood Hills has a wide green lawn and playground with a drinking water fountain and picnic tables with perfect views of the Hollywood sign. Put up in 1923 and originally spelling “Hollywoodland” for a real estate development, the unmistakable large letters were only supposed to last for 18 months. The meteoric rise of filmmaking and fame in Hollywood made the sign it's iconic landmark on Mount Lee in Griffith Park ever since, and its last 4 letters “land” were removed in 1949. This landmark was rebuilt in steel in 1978 and was last repainted in 2005. For an up-close look you can hike into Griffith Park on Mulholland Dr, that is blocked to car traffic a few hundred yards up the switchbacks.

April 2, 2023, Hollywood Hills - Burbank Peak - Cahuenga Peak - Mt Lee

First day in LA - let's start with a hike to the landmark par excellence. The route was rated easy by Komoot - the girls complained a lot on the climb to Burbank Peak - but the view was definitely worth it. On the way back, however, we decided to take a different route through Lake Hollywood Park - so today's tour became a nice circular route. I liked it - especially at 18 degrees hiking is more fun than at five degrees and permanent rain. And the LA skyline was beautiful to look at
