Hiking

You will discover three picturesque lakes on this round trip. In addition to the wonderful landscape, rare bird species such as meadow pipits and reed warblers await you. The starting point is the car park at the Nieder-Mooser See campsite.

First, you will explore the Nieder-Mooser See, which attracts bathers and water sports enthusiasts with its recreational area. Swimming is permitted on the bathing beach with sunbathing lawn. So pack your bathing gear. Surrounded by the dense green of the forest, you will walk along a well-maintained shore path to the Rothenbachteich, a nature reserve in the middle of the forest. There is a bench here for observing the many water birds.

Across meadows and through forests, you will reach the third lake, the Ober-Mooser See. The lake and the adjacent meadows are protected and are looked after by the NABU. On the southern shore, an observation hut invites you to watch birds. Perhaps you will spot a kingfisher or even a black stork?

From here the path leads through the village of Ober-Moos over open meadows for three kilometers along the Nieder-Mooser Lake back to the starting point.

Trail Reviews

Gemeinde Freiensteinau
July 14, 2022, Drei Seen Tour - Nieder-Mooser See - Rothenbachteich - Ober-Mooser See

Directions The path circles the campsite and then leads to the shore area of the Nieder-Mooser See. Despite the proximity to the campsite, you can find quiet places to linger on the shore. The trail turns right, crossing a wooded area and an open hilltop. Then it goes on grass paths in the direction of Crainfeld, with pleasant views over the gentle Vogelsberg landscape and Crainfeld. An open barbecue hut is ideal for a rest. After promising field paths, it goes back into the forest and on to the Rothenbach pond, which is surrounded by forest. Here you can really immerse yourself in the rustling of leaves and natural silence, because any civilization is far away.. On the comfortable bench with a view of the pond and its feathered inhabitants and summer guests - many migratory birds breed here - you can easily while away the hours.. After crossing the country road, the path turns left and climbs gently to a small basalt hilltop in the middle of the field. The small block heap next to it gives an idea that even more basalt is slumbering under these gentle fields, because this region also once belonged to the Vogelsberg volcanic area. The further way is also determined by the constant change of meadows, pastures and forest areas. On the heights you already have beautiful views of both Mooser lakes before the path approaches the shore of the next lake. The Ober-Mooser See and its colorful meadows are under nature protection. NABU Hessen acquired this nature reserve from Count Riedesel with a spectacular fundraiser and now has the opportunity to optimally manage this unique treasure for flora and fauna. Here, an old and traditional pond management should be maintained. Many rare bird species such as the kingfisher or black stork can still be observed today, as well as dragonflies and butterflies. In the middle of the lake, on a tiny island, there is a large tree on which a colony of cormorants has settled. Ober-Moos is located directly behind the lake. The café, which is signposted directly from the lake, offers a place to stop before heading over a ridge back to Nieder-Mooser-See. From here, the well-maintained path along the shore runs anti-clockwise through numerous groves and reeds and always offers new, interesting perspectives of the pond landscape. At the end of this lake stage, the Cafe-Restaurant Jöckl is ideal for a rest. From here it is just under a kilometer over a dam - to the right of which are fish ponds and the mill meadows - to the starting point, where a cafe-restaurant with refreshments is also waiting. On hot days it is a pleasure to use the beautiful bathing beach with sunbathing area at the campsite after the hike.

Today we had another great day of hiking 🥾🎒 We actually wanted to go further towards the snow... But common sense kept us from Hoherrodskopf and Wasserkuppe. They were already advertising the slopes on the radio, but we didn't feel like doing that today 😬 So we did the 3 lakes tour in the Vogelsberg district in central Hesse, to be precise around Obermooser See, Niedermooser See and Rothenbachteich. We started in Obermoos with mulled wine and a snack in our luggage and then walked across meadows lightly powdered with snow towards Niedermoos. The weather was great today and we always had a light, warm ray of sunshine on our faces. At Niedermooser we took our first little mulled wine break before continuing through the forest towards Rothenbachteich. The last 4 kilometers went up and down over meadows, forests and gravel paths and the already slightly low sun bathed the landscape in a beautiful warm backdrop. At Obermooser we emptied our bottles in the bird watching house (inside us, of course) and watched the swans swim for a while. Then we went back to the starting point or the parking lot. A really great tour, especially when there is a bit of snow ❄️. Sometimes it thaws in the forests, which of course is a real mess 😃 We can highly recommend it! Have a nice weekend Sandro and Claudia 😊🍻

Today we start our tour in the Vogelsberg to Niedermoos in glorious sunshine. We start at the campsite and first make our way to the Rothenbachteich, which is located in the middle of the forest. A panorama bench with a view of the pond invites you to rest. The route continues along wonderful field, forest and meadow paths to the Obermooser-See nature reserve. My absolute highlight for this day! A place to recharge your batteries and enjoy peace and quiet! 👍🏻 NABU operates traditional pond management here and thus preserves the habitat for many rare animal and plant species. The lake is also a popular resting place for migratory birds on their journey south. https://hessen.nabu.de/wirueberuns/organisation/stiftung/schutzgebiete/vogelsbergteiche/23118.html From here we walk into town to enjoy self-made ice cream and cakes in Heidi's little café. A real insider tip. At the end there is still a round around the Niedermooser-See. There are of course lots of people out there in this wonderful weather. We therefore have to wait again and again on the narrow paths and only make slow progress. At the campsite kiosk we enjoy an absolutely recommendable coffee and let the Whitsun weekend come to an end. Conclusion: great tour, great weather, great day!

On today's plan 📜 was the Dreienentour Freiensteinau again. The starting point was the hiking portal in the parking lot 🅿️ at the campsite near the village 🏘 Nieder-Moos. On this hike 🥾 the name says it all, as you circle a total of 3️⃣ lakes with the Rothenbachteich, the Ober-Mooser-Reich and the Nieder-Mooser-Teich 🔄. The round is easy to hike with almost 1️⃣3️⃣ km and approx. 1️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ HM ↗️. Lt. Hiking guide it is classified with the level of difficulty easy. The paths lead over field and forest paths, occasionally you also follow narrow paths. With good weather 🌤 and pleasant temperatures 🌡 we saw a number of mushrooms 🍄 and plenty of poultry 🦆🦢. Nature is becoming increasingly colorful, you can tell that it's autumn 🍁🍃🍂 💁🏼‍♂️.

A beautiful and varied trail in glorious hiking weather. 🦢🦆🌞🌲🌳 The trail is also well signposted, making it almost impossible to get lost 😊👍
