Hiking

Beer culture is alive and well in Ehingen, and it's not for nothing that the town on the Danube is called the city of beer culture. The best conditions to get to know the local breweries on this 14-kilometer hike. From the train station in Ehingen it is only about 100 m to the tour. However, the official starting point is at the Bierkulturstadt signpost on the market square (market square bus stop).

At the beginning of the circular hike you walk through the city center and have the chance to taste the in-house hop juice at four historic breweries. At the inner city breweries Schwanen, Adler, Schwert and Rössle, beautiful beer gardens await you for a convivial break. Well strengthened, you then hike out of the city and towards the Danube.

The path leads you through the Donauried on a nature discovery trail to Nasgenstadt. Extensive renaturation measures have given this habitat back to animals and plants. You might even spot beavers, storks or a kingfisher.

In Nasgenstadt you cross the Danube and hike the next stretch along the banks of the river to Berg. Thirst? Then a stop at the Berg Brewery is just what you need. With renewed energy we then return to Ehingen. There you can make yourself comfortable in one of the municipal beer gardens at the end of the hike. Well then cheers!

In the Paulas Alb tavern in the Hotel Adler, you can treat yourself to an enjoyable break on your hike through Ehingen. The chic inn is located in the heart of the old town. And if you feel like it and have the time, you can make your own barley juice in a brewing course.

Trail Reviews

S+S 👣👣
June 19, 2025, Der Bierwanderweg Ehingen (Donau)

Inspired by komoot (sadly, I don't remember who it was from 😕🙈), we made a stop on our way to Albstadt and hiked the Beer Hiking Trail in Ehingen, which is well worth seeing. The trail—especially the part through town—is perfectly marked. We even tried downloading it twice on the loop through the countryside. It's an easy walk on mostly gravel or paved paths. However, there's hardly any shade, so it's not really recommended on hot days. 🍻😅

Ehingen describes itself as a beer culture city and advertises with the slogan "53 beers - 5 breweries - one city. The Bierweg is a good opportunity to explore the city center of Ehingen and the Danube Valley a little more closely. On the way there is always the possibility to scan QR codes in an entertaining way to find out more about Ehingen and especially about beer. If you like, you can also taste one or the other beer on the way.

Really recommendable but I would recommend the end of the pub crawl in Ehingen on the Adler. That's really awesome to eat delicious too 👍😎😁

Ehingen with the nickname beer culture city. Supposedly the place with the most breweries in Germany. There are four breweries in downtown Ehingen alone. Then a fifth one on the hiking trail along the Danube. A nice loop along the Danube, but not spectacular.

Beautiful hike with many places to stop for refreshments - therefore highly recommended even on sunny days 😁🍻🍺

@Deleted User In a brewery you need a good draft🍺😉 Unfortunately I was sitting in a draft all day. Now the bill, no voice and a terrible cold 👎🏻

Unfortunately, I messed up the first part of the recording, so the tour doesn't start until Nasgenstadt. Our starting point was in Ehningen.

We walk from one beer to the next in the beer culture town of Ehingen! Five independent family breweries with a historical company history offer a world of experience that is unique in Baden-Württemberg. The beer culture town has been awarded the state prize "Ideas competition for the enjoyment of Baden-Württemberg" and the Löwenmensch Award of the Swabian Alb, among others. The 15 km long beer hiking trail has also been certified as the only city hike in Baden-Württemberg to date and was voted among the 30 most beautiful hiking trails in Germany in 2010. Start: We begin at the beer culture town signpost, which offers initial orientation just a few meters from the beautiful market fountain. The first 4 km of the very well signposted route follow the paths of the audio tour "Beer tour" and lead to the four inner-city breweries Schwanen, Schwert, Rössle and Adler, to attractive beer gardens and to numerous historic buildings worth seeing. A total of 14 particularly interesting points, so-called points of interest (POI), provide informative and funny insights into the Ehingen beer cosmos via audio files. At the end of this inner-city tour, the route goes uphill to the enchanted Wolfertpark, past the leisure pool, and directly down into the dreamy Danube Valley. There you will find the beer culture sculpture by the Austrian artist Richard Gert, which he created on the occasion of the 4th International Art Forum in Ehingen. Tip: In the Schwanen, Adler and Berg breweries, "historical" beer culture city backpacks are available for a rental fee, which, when filled with a six-pack of cold beer, help quench the thirst that arises in the Danube Valley. I now turn left and walk in the Donauried on the tracks of the Donau-Schmiech nature experience trail to Nasgenstadt. Nature-loving hikers can enjoy unspoiled views of a river landscape close to the city, which has regained some of its original vitality through extensive renaturation measures. The beaver is now just as native there as the white stork and you can sometimes see one of the beautiful kingfishers. Accompanying text panels on the south side of the Danube deepen the understanding of this unique landscape in some places. At Nasgenstadt I cross the Danube and walk past a beer set designed as a reminiscence with unique historical motifs. On the following section I get very close to the Danube. When I arrive in Berg I turn left at the small chapel, which is well worth seeing. Shortly afterwards I come across Brauhausstraße, which takes me to the Berg brewery. In Berg you should plan enough time to visit the brewery vault, the old and impressive ice cellar and the brewery restaurant. On the way back to Ehingen, the trail first goes downhill for a few meters, then turns right past the beer garden of the Landgasthof Rose, until it reaches the Danube bridge. After crossing this, I immediately turn to the Danube, which I follow a little way downstream. A little later, the route leads over two picturesque little bridges (Schmiech), until I finally arrive at the beer hiking trail fork and leave the Danube valley in the direction of Ehingen's market fountain, the end point of the beer hike. The hike also counts towards the International Volkssport Badge DVV. Start cards are available on the market square in the Hotel-Restaurant Gasthof zum Ochsen, Schulgasse 3, 89584 Ehingen, Tel. 07391/77053-0, opening hours: Mon-Sun: 7:00 a.m. to midnight.
